Stocker Slicks... Screws ? Tubes ?
Been a while, guys...
I'm just in the process of FINALLY reassembling my car... using ALL the proper parts that I was told to use[:-whoo2-:] I have a new set of 15 X 10 American Racing Trackstars, with new M/T stick compound 29.5 X 9's. My previous experience showed me that my heavy car likes to have around 14-15 pounds in the tires ( that was a 9 tire on an 8 rim ). I'm told that the slghtly wider wheel allows ( requires ) more tire pressure in order to keep it flat. The fringe benefit being less rolling resistance... better speed. Ok.... I bought it[:-stong-:] My questions are... If I'm going to end up at 15-16 pounds, Do I need screws ? Can I run them tubeless ? ( they've been mounted, with 14 pounds in them for the past 3 months... never lost a pound ). If you stay with tubes, you MUST run screws otherwise a little movement will rip the stem out. But I've seem most run without, which saves weight. The tire will move a bit, especially during the first few passes. I rotate them side-to-side, mainly for wear.
It seems most racers use 9" slicks on a 10" rim. But I've heard of pressures anywhere from 14 to 26 lbs with no pattern that I've noticed relative to weight. I ran 22lbs in bias ply tires and now 20 in radials weighing 3,530+. Locomotion Racing http://www.geocities.com/locomotionracing |

Guess I'll just keep an eye on them. Being able to run more pressure than I thought makes me happy too. I like the high speed stability. If you go without tubes on bias ply slicks. Coat the inside of the tire (sidewalls) with a household liquid dish soap before mounting. When you mount, clean the tire, and rim beads with brake clean, and don't lube the beads.
Or take the easy way (like I did) and run Hoosier radials. ;-) |
Using screws is a personal preference, some do some don't, I have always used them. I drill & tap the rim for 1/4-20 cap screws that are sharpened to the right length, I also drill into the tire bead so the screw doesn't push the tire away from the rim. As stated above, soap the inside of the tire. 15lbs seems alot for a stick car I would start with 12 or 13 lbs, I run 10 to 11 depending on the track. Also, radials don't work on stick cars.

Aubrey, how's the rear end holding up in the car? You still have the stock 10-bolt or did you upgrade?

This upgrade kit that I designed, does the job, doesn't waste horsepower... and is WAY easier to do gear changes than a 12 bolt. In the morning, I'm heading to see my machinist to pick up my rear end housing and the new brackets that I designed to install the Wilwood disc brakes. I should post a picture of the setup before I install it.
