NHRA rod acceptance
 
How hard is it to get a rod looked at for acceptance by NHRA. I don't see a good selection of aftermarket rods for the 383 SS motor. Of the two listed I was old one is no longer made. Or maybe a better question would be what should I use?

i am in the process of doing the same,contact nhra tech, if you have a rod your going to use you will have to send them one so they can mesure and weigh it,keep us posted on how you make out gmonde

Maybe RocketBlock could shed more light on this,but I thought I saw an application for an accepted Crower rod that said big end specify,small end specify,custom length and custom weight.Am I reading the chart right?

What bothers me about this is the rod supplier thought I should go ahead and purchase a set then submit it because they only had a few sets left and are not going to make up anymore 383 length rods with the .990 pin diameter. I didn't want to buy a couple of sets only to find out NHRA would not accept them. The rods are supposed to be very close to the listed stock weight. I guess I will call NHRA tech tomorrow and see what I need to dol Thanks

Will; The rod supplier knows that the market is very limited for racers that will buy the rod and they don't really care if NHRA accepts thier rod, If I were in thier position I'd make you buy a set and "YOU" can supply them with the sample. This seems to be the problem with NHRA they don't care what happens with S/SS and the suppliers know it so they act accordingly, Have you won "Class" lately? that's all you need to know what's going on.

Having just been through the approval process for parts, I suggest you contact Len Imbrogno, Wesley Roberson, and probably Bob Lang. You should also be aware that the manufacturer of the component must submit the part and the supporting documentation. And yes, the manufacturer will almost surely require you to buy the part they submit. Be prepared to spend money, make phone calls, send emails, be frustrated, and wait.

If it were I, I would call NHRA, probably Wesley or Bob Lang. I would fax over to him the spec's of the rod your interested in and compare it to the data NHRA has on their web page. Ask him "if I send you a rod and it matches these specifications, will you approve it?" Just tell him it's sensless to go out and buy rods on the hope and prayer he will approve it. At tis point a gentlemans agreement should be reached and then go buy your rod(s) and follow thru with your commitment to NHRA.
I've gotten rods approved before but it was before NHRA had these tables so maybe now it is more difficult as indicated by Alan.

I'm just saying it CAN be difficult, not that it has to be. Wesley and Bob have considerable input, but the parts and the spec sheet went to Glendora, and the inspection/approval happened there. Wesley helped in both cases, and Bob in one. But neither did the actual inspection/approval.
