Best cam for E7 Heads

Building a 1992 Fox hatchback, (NHRA Super Stock) anyone know the best cam to use with the stock E7’s? (Upgraded valvetrain, including springs) it will be about 90% track driven, I will be driving it for about an hour to and from the track.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I hope you did a little research on SS and your class, NHRA index, car weight, safety requirements, etc. Think you may need more than a cam.

I ran a SS 92 Mustang a couple years ago. If you build a car that is competitive at all, you will not want to be driving it to and from the track. These engines, trans, and gear ratio's are not conducive to street driving. But to answer your question. we ran a .617 lift cam from Bullet.

617. Cam with stock E7 heads? Didnt even know that was possible. Ive driven some pretty extreme cars on the street, as long as you have an over drive gear its not so bad, I would be staying with a 5 speed.

Ive done a lot of research so far, but the rules still arent very clear, especially for EFI cars. It doesnt say anything about the Cold Air Intake youre allowed to use, no exhaust sizes are specified (2.5” or 3” collectors), etc.

If you're truly intending to run NHRA SS I invite you to head out to a Divisional or National in your area and take a look at a few of these cars... I can absolutely guarantee you won't be driving that particular combination to and from the track if you think you will be running under the index. I'm sure there are a few combinations out there this might be doable (I can't think of a single on is SS) but a fox mustang is not it.

I absolutely and totally agree!

The Hawks know these Mustangs quite well.

If you're talking stick car, I don't see any way that you are going to get this done without at least a Jericho or GForce and a slipper clutch combo that isn't really going to work in a street car, that combo plus the 6.00 gears that would be required to make this competitive just don't make this in any way viable. There might be a few 'soft' stocker combos that could be street driven, this isn't one of them.

The general goal for the car is to build a period correct Super Stocker. What a guy wouldve built back in the 90’s to compete in Super Stock, more of like a tribute thing, im not looking to compete in todays world and make money off it, just want it to abide by the rules of Super Stock and maintain period accuracy.
The car was originally a Stock Eliminator car in 1998 that I bought off a guy in NC, but Ive oersonally always admired the Super Stock category since I was a kid, reading about guys like Bill Jenkins, Ronnie Sox, all of them. So its like a time capsule/tribute sort of deal.

So let me get this straight. You want to build a street-strip, period correct, from the 90’s Mustang Super Stock look alike? Are you going to back halve the car? Roll cage? If it doesn’t have to be legal you could run a bigger motor. Good luck on what you do, although asking about what cam you should run is not something you’re going to find out here.
