Jacksonville NC, where to live, and hows the racing
 

My Son and his young family are getting stationed at camp lejeune in late September.

Due to Florence, military housing is well a bit scarce and they are looking to rent or buy a house with a fenced in yard for the two cute dogs and the rapidly growing grandson.

Any suggestions, leads etc would be greatly appreciated. The good, the bad and the ugly is always helpful.

Re racing, how is the Jacksonville track, distance to other tracks? I have only been down there once when he graduated Infantry school, so my knowledge of the area is pretty limited.

Eric I think your son will enjoy Jacksonville, it is one of most rapidly growing areas around in the eastern part of our state. When the recession was going 10 years ago it never seemed to effect Jacksonville as there was still lots of construction going there. It's about 30 minutes south of me and I go there a few times a year to bracket race or test. They're Friday night drags seem to be real popular with the military guys where they run street cars 1/4 mile and they let us test quarter also. The bracket program is run 1/8 mile like everything else around here. It's also about an hour and a half to Galot where they have about the best program around and have our division race later in the year and other special events there as well.
I don't think he will have any problem finding good housing in the area as there are several nice subdivisions around. To me it's a great area to live, about an hour to Wilmington where there lots of stuff to do. Feel free to call me or have him call me if I can help him out in any way. 252 six70 three three 55

I grew up in J'ville, still get there every week. As far as the town, overall much better than it was when I moved to Wilm in 96, and seems to be getting better. Coastal Plains Dragway is a nice facility and has a pretty good bracket racing program. Also has a little roundy round track next door. Don't know if round track is running this year, but I believe it was last year. Also have Kinston Dragway about 45 minutes away. They have a good program there also. KDS also has a group called the 252 List. Heads up style racing on Thursday night. Some pretty damm impressive hotrods there. Think the 252 guys have 2 races monthly, but not 100% sure on that. As HR9121 stated, Galot is close by. GREAT facility. Drag strip, tractor pulls and monster trucks there. A little farther away, but well worth the trip is Fayetteville Motorsprots park with drags and a roundy round dirt track. Peidmont and Farmington also within decent driving distance. Check with HR9121 about New Berns drag strip, I heard it may be re-opening sometime. There's a couple more tracks a little north of Jax as well I believe.

The Carolina Class Racers will hold 3 races this coming Fall at Coastal Plains Dragway in Jacksonville. Come on down to visit and race with us ! The Humphreys family who run this track are very good to us. Schedule is found on our section here on CR. 👍

Eric, the ccra racing down is run mostly like Allstar up there.Except they have 13 to 14 races instead of 6. and at more than 2 tracks.It's fun racing.

I’m a retired Marine that was previously stationed at Camp LeJuene. If your son can find a place at either Hubert or Swansboro he can avoid having to deal with so much traffic at the Jacksonville gates going into Camp Lejuene; the schools are better as well.

The Coastal Plains Raceway in Richlands is owned by Mr. Humphries that used to race Pro Stock. My electric fan went out and caused my car to run hot, so he came and pulled me back to my pit and talked to me for close to an hour. One of the nicest guys I’ve ever met.

Also, the Charlotte Raceway is only (4) hours away.

I believe that's the area to be if you love drag racing.
My brother in law lives near Gallot and took me over to see one of his buddies that races Super Stock and his son works for Bobby Warren.
He told me that he could race 6 nights a week and not travel more than 50 miles. Sounds like heaven to me! LOL
