Quick release steering wheel
 

I have a 63 Plymouth Savoy. Looking to put a quick release steering wheel in it now. With stock steering wheel hard to get in and out. Have done some research on it but maybe someone has done this to their Mopar and has some tips.

While there are direct bolt on hubs available for various Ford and GM columns ,I don't know of any that fit the earlier Mopar splines.
I would replace the stock shaft with a .065"x .750" chromemoly shaft and replace the stock bearings in the tube with a nylon bushing.
By using the 3/4" shaft you can choose from dozens of quick release hubs.
Borgeson has couplers for just about any steering box or you could machine the trunion shaft to fit the 3/4" tube.

Thanks for your help. In researching everything was unclear. Places say they have a hub until you really get into it.

Tom; Can you send me in the right direction for these direct bolt on hubs available for various Ford and GM columns? I have a '70 Olds Cutlass, and would like to keep the stock column/steering wheel with a quick release.. Thanks for any info...

Grant "has" them for GM vehicles that are NHRA legal. They claim not to have any to ship till October.

Most, if not all Mopar steering gear equipment of that era were made at Saginaw steering (GM plant) so any GM kit will work.

Do these "direct bolt on" hubs for various Ford and GM columns, move the wheel closer to the driver?

When considering a quick release steering wheel for any car that runs on a NHRA sanctioned dragstrip, remember that the NHRA rulebook in the General Regulations section state that....."Adapter must be welded to shaft."

Right now the only 42.1 SFI splined quick release hubs that seem to be available are ones from Jeg's house brand which you have to order the splined hub separately and I think they only fit the 6 bolt wheels ,not the more popular 5 bolt style or from NRG Innovations ,which has a large selection of hubs to adapt to the column.
Although I don't agree with the need for welding ,since the same nut that retains the hub retained the wheel, Travis is correct as stated in the rules. ….I run a bead around the retaining nut and shaft to prevent any accidental undoing.
