Automatic trans shifting

I am wondering if any of the Stock racers have ever set their transmissions up to shift automatically.Just finished watching the video of Sterling Simmons C/SA (in the magazine portion of this site) and you can clearly hear the rpm change yet the shifter handle doesn't seem to move. Would the computer in the car be controlling the shifts with the shifter left in "D" or ?

Re: Automatic trans shifting

In Stock Eliminator, cars originally equipped with automatic transmissions that were shifted electronically by the computer as delivered from the factory can use "E-shift" systems, even on transmissions that were not original to the car, and did not originally have "E-shift". So a late model EFI car can use "E-shift", but an older carburetor equipped car cannot. Some older cars are equipped with "auto 1-2" valve bodies. Those cars leave the starting line with the shifter in 2nd, but the car leaves in 1st, then shifts to 2nd at a pre set RPM. The "auto 1-2" feature is controlled by the governor and the vacuum modulator in most cases.

My Opinion: Stock trans with OEM electric shift is OK unmodified. Otherwise, all transmission shift upgrades should be driver activated. It's called racing, not programming for Gods sake.

What about a stock 727 ? No plates or vb just put it in drive and go.

I am not a Mopar racer but I doubt a stock 727 trans will shift automatically at 6500 rpm or so without modifications. Most of the older OE trans shift far too low in the rpm range for use with a stocker camshaft.

I wonder if Helms, Hughes, Waldo and the rest had auto shift.

I have a turbo 400 that has the modulator and weights set up so that it will shift at 5800 just putting it in drive and go. We have the electric kick-down on a switch if you turn the switch on it shifts at 6500 both shifts. Takes some testing to get them right but works great once you have it.

I know Paul Crowe set some up to shift their self, just leave in drive and go.

I have always thought it was funny all these guys talking about they had to have rpm activated air shifter to be competitive and running a glide, You can't click a shifter once at about 330'consistently.
