MSD Digital 7

Is anyone using the 7531 MSD ignition? I'm reading up on it and it says you need a spark plug wire sync kit. What is it for? Any feedback on the box would be appreciated. Thanks

I use the MSD 7530T digital.I like the idea of no RPM pills and three
step limiters.
I do have an issue of some time the launch RPM limiter is not as programed.
I set it for 6600 and quite often I will come out between 5700 to 5900!?.

as I understand you only need that if you plan on retarding individual cylinders. this is usually done by pro-stock teams etc. you won't need it to use the boxes other features.
also, slew rate (traction control) is still illegal to use in most classes.

Yes the sync is used for individual cylinder timing, have a few nitrous guys that use that feature. Pretty handy for that purpose, but doubt of much use on most engines.

I don't think the 7531 is legal for s/ss the 7530T is

Just put one in my car, works great but pay attention to programming especially stuff like the safety shut down timer/rpm.

Bill, I have one question about these MSD controllers, do they supply a cable to connect a laptop to it? I see much in the manual about how to program the features, but very little about how to actually connect the computer and download the program.

Yes,

It comes with a RS232 serial cable (which most laptops don't have anymore) kind of dated technology. But you can buy a USB to serial adapter at places like Best Buy for less than $20.
It comes with a CD with the software which is also very easy to install and use
The easiest way to program it is to connect to it and set the parameters directly rather than creating a file while disconnected and then loading into the MSD

Thanks, Bill. I assumed it must be something like that. I'll initially program it as you suggest, but I may go to files later as I plan on also bracket racing it, and I'll need to use different parameters if I stay in my current bracket.
