Hoosier C06 or C07 Radials?
I have a '66 Coronet setup like Stocker expect with 493" 13.0cr power plant and glass hood. It's been a few years since I've had this combo on the track, but have 450+ passes in the car. It has QA1 Double Adjustables up Front, CalTrac Leafs, Rancho 5-Way Rear and CalTrac Bars. I have 5" of range in front with .840 T-Bars. PTC 9" @ 5200rpm. I've ran it with ATI 8" with better short times. Last time out, I went 9.93@135 with 1.404 60' at ~800DA on 94"circ Hoosier Radials C06. That was almost 8 years ago! I always used Hoosier Radials because the section width is the only one that will fit the fenderwell with some custom spacing. I got an easy 125 passes out of the last set, but that's when they were $199 a piece! Last time I ran BIAS, I only got about 75 passes before the sidewalls were mush.
My question to you guys is simple. Do I go back to the C06's or C07's on a 3650# car? Any changes over the last few years in tire tech? I'll be mainly bracket racing at Gainesville, and nearly all 660'. I really don't want to buy from a warehouse (JEGS or SUMMIT), and our local guy only handles MT, or I would buy from them. I put these on my mustang, may be a little short for your car.

You didn't say what width tire you plan on running. When you say set up like a stocker am I to assume you run a 9 inch wide tire? We run a Hoosier 9/30.0 Radial C06 in a 4260 lb. car with driver and they work very well and last a good amount of time. However, your car is making more horsepower than we do. If you used a C06 in the past with success, I see no reason why the C06 compound wouldn't work well for you now. The C06 works well in a heavier car. Talk to Steve Hudspeth @ Hoosier Racing Tire he can point you in the right direction.

I've been running the 9.0/30.0R-15 lightweight radials which are C06 compound. Normally I'm at 3,540+ in J/CM or 3,700+ in K/CM and they've worked well for me, as long as the track is properly maintained.
It would help to get a wider wheel which would allow you to run more air pressure and possibly help the sidewalls. I run mine at 21 lbs. It wears a bit more in the middle, but that's where it likes it. Many Stockers have their 9" tires on 10" rims. But that may cause issues with section width clearance if you are narrower now or difficulty in getting the right offset. The harder C07 compound radials may extend life, but I'm saving a couple of pounds of rotating weight with the C06. The Cal-Tracs probably hit the tires harder than SS springs. Thanks Myron! Mike Griggs aligned my front end a few years back, and I know them from the Raceway. He also mounted my first set of Hoosiers many years ago!

Like Myron, I run the Hoosier 9.0/30.0R-15 (94")... I have tried both the C06 and the C07 compounds... My 60' times were the same (1.40 area) but I got about 20-25 more passes with the C07's so that is what I run. My car weight with driver is 3540..
Plan on about 500.00 a set best... |

Thanks Guys! The C07 seems to be the best fit from all the responses and phone calls I've made. I appreciate all the positive input!
We'll have the car ready to go for some shakedown passes and racing on the 26th. Taking a slow and deliberate pace so we don't miss anything. I've got a line on a 426" that I may be into soon. Gotta start reading some B/SA rules now to see how much work that would be. |

C07 were the ticket! Decided to put the 8" ATI Converter back in as well since were mainly 1/8th mile around here.
Pass1----Pass2 0.038-----0.031 1.425-----1.420 4.092-----4.088 6.381-----6.374 106.83---107.12 Ran 'em at 20psi with 2 Sec Burnout. Left off footbrake at 2000rpm with 26" tires up front. 2100-2200' DA with reasonable track conditions. I feel like we can get a 1.3x 60' and sub 4.0 330' in right conditions and a few more tweaks. The 6.35 I'd ran 8 years ago was on stellar track and a 450' DA day. |
