Tree question

When did NHRA go from 5 ambers to 3 lights on the tree? Anyone remember what color the bulb indicating who got the handicap was?

There is a really good article by Phil Burgess on Dragster Insider about the history of the Christmas Tree. Went from 5 to 3 ambers at the 1986 Winternationals.

Re: Tree question

In the 1960's NASCAR sanctioned Drag Racing and Atco was one of their main tracks and they used to run the "Leaver's Lose" system.
Two staging lights; one yellow then green very much like a pro tree without all the lights.

I often wonder how such a system might work today? It would probably kill "Box" racing.

It would be great without the boxes
