How often do you swap slicks?
How often do you guys swap out slicks for new ones? Every season, after so many runs, or ???. Is there really a huge advantage, as in, do they fall off in performace a large amount? I am guessing the lower HP cars do it less frequently?
I don't think I will have an issue, but I am very curious. |
Re: How often do you swap slicks?
Some brands go away faster. In my limited experience Goodyears go away sooner. 30 to 40 passes. Hoosiers & MTs have worked until cord was showing.
Do you turn yours around (swap sides) every few passes? They seem to work better longer doing that. |
Re: How often do you swap slicks?
When everything else is right, and the 60 ft. and E.T. start to fall off, and your
lights start to get erratic, it's probably time for a new pair. |
Re: How often do you swap slicks?
my 3500 pound 300/286 horse 70 chevelle will get no more than 40 runs on a set of M/T radials, I don't even bother doing anything but check pressures anymore. Ed is right they work right up to the cords showing....done that a time or two....

Re: How often do you swap slicks?
too many variables....,power, weight, tire manufacturer, tire size, tire type, air pressure, burnout, yada, yada, yada, to state a definitive number.

Re: How often do you swap slicks?
I use the Hoosier DOT's for Pure Stock and get as many as 200 runs out of them.
Most tracks are well prepared and need little buffing. Get them spinning see smoke and roll out.. The new tires seem to be a bit more rugged, last longer and have good consistent bite. However my car is heavy and may not be as sensitive to the vulcanization from repeated heat during burnout. D |
Re: How often do you swap slicks?
103 and counting Goodyear 4457, swap them side to side every four to six runs. I use a light burn out in 2nd gear and go race. 3600lbs. car with almost 600 ft./lbs. of torque.

How long does it take for you to make 103 runs? I haven't made that many in the last two years.Too many first round losses, I guess.Congrats on your latest win. |
Re: How often do you swap slicks?
Larry, Kenny Faulk is who told me the Goodyears tend go away sooner on Amy's Stocker. Probably 5 years ago. May not still be the case.
I have one set. Hook as well as the MTs on good tracks. Not as well for me on marginal tracks. Only about 15 passes. They slow my car down 4 to 5 Hundredths. (5lbs each heavier, I assume that 10lbs more rotating weight on a 31" circle is why) therefore I have not run them long enough to actually know when they would go away. Sure would like to sell them. Since I don't actually know from experience, I should have kept quiet. Sorry. |
