question for the smart guys
since this is the holiday season and there is no racing. I figured I would pick your brains. I am a huge fiero guy yes I know stop laughing at me. Question since ups doesn't give me the budget for a four speed max wedge stocker I wonder would a fiero gt make a competitive combo. Billy I know your smiling so share your wisdom. Would love to hear possible class and how far under you think it could go.

Re: question for the smart guys
Prior to the AHFS, when HP was ruled by committee, I believe Billy had asked for 5 HP back on the Fiero. Reply: "Not if YOU'RE building it! YOU'LL make it FLY!"

Re: question for the smart guys
Didn't know there was such a thing as a "Huge Fiero guy",, how'd you fit in the car?
Yeah, I know, I'm being a smart guy. I actually saw a Fiero GT in Super Gas a few years back,,, didn't look bad. Good luck with your project. Danny Durham |
Re: question for the smart guys
I'm not sure I qualify to respond here , but here goes:
The 87 THM GT will make T/SA . @ 150 HP, I think it's a bit high...Ask Jim Wahl about that combo. It's 155 in the Cimarron, FWD but you get a .430 lift cam. The TH125 is essentially a mini T200, so all the low drag tricks would apply. You are limited with the final drive , but a really short drag radial would work fine ,as I can't see how traction would be an issue. Cams are available..390/ 410 lift is what a lot of the 350 Chevies use. You'll have to fab the headers. You used to be able to get S10 kit pieces. I'd build a 7 " converter to get the rpm's up to make up for the gear ratio. I think it would run the NHRA index without too much trouble |
Re: question for the smart guys
wasn't 88 last year. I worked across the shop from them on Isuzu's.
I thought they were from 84, the 84C15 recall cars, to 88GT's where they finally got them right but public gave up on them. This is all from memory tho.... |
Re: question for the smart guys
Yes you are right 84-88 always wanted one. Just thought that would be an interesting challenge. Also they are rwd.

Re: question for the smart guys
The car I was playing with was an 85 2.5/120/113 car. It is a natural V/SA that can make W. The car has a "stupid computer" in it that you can make do what you want it to. It has a pretty big throttlebody and the heads and intake look good. Biggest problem would be the transaxle. The best final drive that you can get from the factory is a 3.73. I've heard that there's someone in upstate N.Y. that might make yoy a 4.10. Yac can make you a converter and even do the trans for you. 4 cyl car has got enough room that you can make your own headers. Find the shortest slicks that you can (or even drag radials?) and it would probably do much better than index. It would hook in a carwash.
I think in hindsight that it could be a fun little car and would probably run well. I probably didn't give it much of a chance as I really didn't like the "disconected" feel that I got while driving it. |
