These were cute little cars with the original small blocks back in the day...then they were turned into Monsters with big blocks added to them! :eek:

Approximately 300 of the 1965 Mercury Comet Cyclone's were built
with the 289/225 HP 'Super Cyclone'.

1965 NHRA Class = F/Stock

Very nice street cars.

Back in 1965 one of my friends bought one with the 271hp and ordered the Ford Tri-Power which actually came completely assembled and ready to bolt on, it was a quick car on the street.

#2994 lbs.

The fiberglass hood option, saved about an additional 35 lbs. of 'nose weight'.

In 1965, NHRA Classes
* 289/200 HP = G/Stock
* 289/225 HP = F/Stock
* 289/271 HP = D/Stock

My Dad had a 65 Comet with the 200cuin 6...

Got great mileage. Brakes were ok.

It was a nice car..learned to drive in it.

BTW what class do they run today with NHRA and IHRA?

Re: 1965 Mercury Comet

In 1965, the cars would be classed in NHRA,

* 289/271 HP = D/Stock........(11.30 - 11.88 Wt/Hp)

Which I would believe is the same Classification as today,
without the horsepower factor changes.

Re: 1965 Mercury Comet

In its day, there was a white '64 Comet Cyclone 271hp on the streets of Little Rock with all kinds of "Cobra" add-ons - 2x4s, Cobra valve covers, Cobra air cleaner, big cam, headers. . . . It was pretty quick and schooled many of the GM and MoPar muscle cars. One of the better street races I remember was a face-off between that car and a four-door '58 BelAir black-and-white ex-police car that was equipped with a basic 365hp 327 4-speed out of a Corvette. The Chevy was the teacher that night, showing what a 4.56 gear will do to move a barge.
