Help!

I have been having an issue with my GT/CA car for about a year and can't seem to find the issue. It is a 84 Camaro 402/335 with TH400. You can see it in the video link below of the tach. It climbs to the stall speed of 6200, then falls to 5400 and then climbs again. In the video it blows thru 1st gear to 8000 (shift point was 7400) and then shifts at 8100 to third. I am getting 1.45-1.49 60ft times like this. It seems to come and go, it will go 1.32 60ft when it has worked (only 6 runs out of 70).

Don't know if this is tied to it but the car does not want to do a burnout at all. I have a 7600 chip for burnout and it will hit it in first gear but when I shift to second it slowly drops down below 6000 and will not climb back up.

I have tried 2 different trans, had converter back to ATI twice, tried three quadrajets, checked and added additional grounds, replace 7AL and checked kill switch.

I am out of ideas so thought someone on hear has had this problem in the past. Thanks for any help you can give!

Over 400 views and no ideas? I also get 1 gallon of fuel in 20 seconds beyond the regulator but have been told I could still have a fuel pump problem. Going to try a different one next.

What about the rpm not staying up in the burnout, any ideas?

Thanks!

Sounds like the motor is down on power and might need a freshen up. I would pull it out and check everything. Do a leak down and make sure there is no blow by on any of the intake valves. Looks like you have pretty much eliminated the other common issues. What shift management system are you using?

Thanks for the reply Mike! The incrementals are fine from the 60ft on. It has 80 runs on it now but do not want to freshen till this is solved. Leaked at 55 runs and was fine. Been doing this on and off since car/engine were completed.

Wanted to get conversation started and maybe it would jar something in someone out there. Have had multiple people look at it that I would consider excellent racers, engine builders, etc. It will be something stupid, just have to find it!

Re: Help!

It looks like maybe more than one thing.
Fuel delivery is a possibility. Make sure regulator and line to carb are ahead of carb. Check float level and pressure. If you run higher pressure like 7 or 7 1/2, I would try a float setting of .425. Also make sure fuel isn't coming out of vent tube at launch. ( 90 degree spark plug boot facing forward on vent tube should take care of this)
As far as shift point , some transmissions will " lag" as much as 700 RPM. Just set accordingly.
These kind of things will give you fits. Hang in there!

Data logger? First place I would look is battery (shorted plates), supply and grounds.

Can you post the incrementals of a good run and bad run?

Re: Help!

Bert, I had a problem almost the same as yours, but mine would run the 60 ft, np. 120 60's and only run 5.90's to 6,00's. Would not run on the stop at all. Changes trans , twice, 2 converter, 3 msd boxes, dist. New fuel pump, new coil . I have a belt drive pump, replaced fuel lines. After a year of fighting this i found my problem, just two weeks ago. With all the new high tech things we have now, it was a call to bolaws that helped me fine my problem. All the high volume pumps we have today needs at least a # 10 vent tube to keep them from sucking a vacum in the fuel tank, killing the power. Changed mine went 120 60ft 560.0 123 mph 1/8 8.80 at 153 mph 1/4, with just that one change. One year to fine this problem.Just something to try, worked for me. I feel your pain 82 camero.

Re: Help!

Have you tried to bypass trans cooler or change the lines? Possibly starving the trans/converter for oil? I imagine you've checked the pickup.

Re: Help!

Looks and sounds like the stator locking up in the converter. I know you've had it back to be checked out twice, but you need to try another converter for testing purposes. I've seen this happen many times.
