TBI/CFI/EFI computer contols?

Just a question, if you choose to run an EFI, TBI, or a Ford CFI car, say from the 80's, how do you upgrade the tune? Do you use a program with/for a laptop, or just have a chip burned, or what do you do? I'd especially be curious about 80's Ford EFI/CFI (throttle body)?

Most people go to a aftermarket programmable ecu that uses a laptop

FAST XFI and BigStuff3 are the two most popular right now. Several use ACCEL DFI and Holley ECUs too. They come with the wiring harness also.

We use the AEM ECU, it is easy to program and AEM has great tech support.
