Re: Longer ball joint.......

Moves the pivot point up allowing less camber change at lift and thus less toe change .---Trevor

B&B perfromance at one time market a longer ball joint for use in the upper a arms of GM cars which allowed for more upward travel in the front suspension.
This was very helpful if you were using a leaf spring slapper bar type rear suspension because when this rear suspension worked correctly it tended to lift the rear of the car some what.
So to keep the weight from transferring forward we would build in a lot of front end travel using the extended ball joints modified A arm bushings, tall but weaker Moroso "Trick Springs" and a fairly tall front tire.
And it's not stupid to ask questions, "we are all ignorant only on different subjects." (Will Rogers):D

In the 80's I made a 1"(I think or 1-1/2) aluminum upper ball joint spacer to raise the upper A arm

Re: Longer ball joint.......

Putting a spacer between the upper ball joint and control arm dosen't really do anything other than allow the suspension to droop more. A longer ball joint stud may actually change the arc of the upper arm. ---Trevor

Hasn't been legal in Stock since the Junior Stock days.
The longer stud ball joints seem to fall into the "manufacturer's tolerance" category with NHRA..

Re: Longer ball joint.......

Do you mean by droop that the front end sits lower than without the spacers?
Like many things that are not legal, it is only illegal when you are caught.

Re: Longer ball joint.......

I was under the belief that the long upper ball joint helps put more positive camber in the front end so the front tires are not running on the inside edge possibly scrubbing also.
Might help w more positive caster, but that I'm not so sure of.

Re: Longer ball joint.......

Droop is the amount the front suspension will hang down in a wheelie situation. The longer ball joints help maintain your camber in droop. The balljoint extenders alluded to were easy to spot poorly manufactued and frequently broke , simple to outlaw.---Trevor
