I did a quick search and :

The first 8 second Pro Stock was a 1973 Duster ( Ronald Lyles ?? )

Not sure what year that happened tho. Maybe a stats guy can chime in.

Wow....from 8 second Pro Stocks to 8 second Stockers in less than 40 years.

Bobby DeArmond made the first 9 second Stock run at Mission BC May 6, 2001. I believe on the tape "4 Days In May", Jim Waldo made the comment that it was (if I recall correctly), "23 years to the day that I made the first 10 second Stock run at Seatle".

If so, then it was 1978.

It took less than half the amount of time to break the 8 sec. barrier as it did the 9 second.

First 10 sec. Stocker : May 06, 1978
First 9 sec. Stocker : May 06, 2001
First 8 sec. Stocker : April 13, 2012

A couple important points not to be missed

Don has consistantly run fast and done it with a stick in the car. He doesn't hold back , give the guy Lots of credit for that, I suspect if he ran that car with an automatic flat out all the time like he does, his fellow competitors would have his picture on a dart board in their trailers. It is a true testament to his hard work that he kept the car stuck all the way down the track. 8.90's on a 9 inch tire is very impressive.

In respect to the previous barrier brakers, Bobby DeArmond and Jim Waldo, they did it in A/SA and A/S which are 8 lbs weight breaks, which at the time were the fastest classes in stock. Don is in AA/S which is a 6.5lb weight break, if Don could run A/S he would need to weigh 700+ lbs more than he does in AA/S

I mean no disrespect to Don, his accomplishment is more than noteworthy, and we need more racers like him. I hope he gets some "first in the eights" tee shirts made, I'll take one
