Blowing oil out of trans?

A friend of mine has a SBC stocker and recently experienced a problem. He made several passes with no problems. But on his last pass once he crossed the finish line and got out of it it started pooring smoke out. He saw it, cut it off and coasted off the track. When I got to him he showed me where the dip stick was pushed out and trans oil was everywhere!. It is a T200 with a breather tube on the firewall and a locking dipstick. He just loaded it up and went home. The trans seamed to work ok after that. What could cause this? The trans is not brand new but not wore out. Any ideas? Thanks

Does the breather tube go to a catch can?? All of my 200r4 do this when hot,so I built a nice catch can with a drain ****

I run a m200 in my stocker, heard of that happening. Seeing it never did it before I would pull the pan and have a look. You say it pushed out the locking dipstick, did you just install it. The orig. one has a v in the upper seal which helps in venting. gsa612

Does he know what his transmission fluid temperature is?

If it pushed a locking dip stick out of the tube, the vent system is stopped up somewhere.

In any event, that much pressure is a sure sign of a fair amount of heat.

X2 on what Alan said. High fluid temps, over full condition, plugged vent or an internal hydraulic oil pressure leak can cause this as well. It's best to fill race transmissions to the 1 pint below full mark if the dipstick is labeled as such. Hope this helps, just my .02.

I still agree with having an over -flow bottle for M-200 ... Also agree
with running it a pt. low to start ...Check the dipstick & tube for cracks. Agree with Alan on fluid temp ? Make sure you check level after a few passes , if its low for a while it will start to flash higher in the 1-2 & 2-3 shifts .... Good Luck ,

If you used an aftermarket chrome dipstick tube with your original dipstick............the tube is 1 1/4 inches too long....your trans could be overfull by a little over 2 quarts.............

Re: Blowing oil out of trans?

I always check the calibration of dipstick, If you have a production pan the full hot mark should be right at the pan gasket. Full hot is measured at 200 degF. transmission temperature. If you overfill the trans the oil will get up into the rotating parts and whip up like a milkshake. The venting system cannot handle that volume of frothed up oil and will spit it out. Also, sometimes the pump halves are not flat, and high pressure oil will cross leak inside the pump. This could cause oil out the vent. The pump halves need to be flat, and torqued to factory specs.

one possibility toois that after several passes the fluid got hot enough to boil and spew out. aithappened on a tow truck once (and had a little fire).
