Welded crank
 

Anybody have a problem with welding and repairing a rod journal on a steel crank? Engine is a 327 with a problem on the #4 rod journal. It broke the big end of a rod last season, didn't seem to spin the bearing, but left a gouge on the journal.Crank is a steel large journal .010/.010, and the rest of the crank looks like a good polish job would about do it. I personally have no problem doing that, what do you serious motor people think?

Ran a lot of Boss 302 welded strokers ran them to 10,000 rims at Cheby journal size, had cranks done any where from 3.20,3.25,3.30 and 3.40 stroke 2.00 dia. Lunati and Hank the Crank. Lunati were hard chromed.

How bad is the gouge ? I would rather see it reground down to 20 or 30 or even 40 if it cleans up at that. Welding is "ok" IF it is done properly but the heat will make the crank move all over the place and need straightening before regrinding.

Send it to Bullet Cams.
I had one that was gouged and they fixed it back by doing a spot weld and regrind. They didn't weld the complete journal, just the gouged spot.
This was a nice 4.750 stroke crank and the 620 cu in engine is still making waves in the boat after 2 years.

Like Adger said they can be welded in one spot without welding whole journal,most likely whole crank will have to be ground after welding.

Hi Greg: We used to do a bunch of welded strokers 20 years ago . This
was before all the Chinese Stuff. I always had them straightened and hardened at a speciality crank shop I still use him on my Stock Eliminator stuff. He is in Buena Park
off 91 which is not too far from you. Let me know and I will PM you the address

John thanks for the reply.I can always take it down and get his opinion. I would appreciate the contact. Hope all is well with all of you. No more kidney stones on this end. I feel better than I have for a couple of years since they shattered the boulder I was carrying around for apparently some time.Take care, see you at Pomona.
