.430 Valve lift for everyone?

The NHRA rule book says that if you are running stock with a front-wheel-drive or stock truck, your maximum lift is .430 or OEM which ever is greater. I am running a '77 Pinto with the 2.8L V6 that has .391/.391 stock lift. Can I run .430 lift or does that only apply when this same engine is in a For Ranger truck? Anybody run across this? Thanks.

It pretty much spells it out to me. Pintos arent trucks or front wheel drive but who knows. Get rid of the fiber top timing gear on your V6, they dont last in stock ones. Put lifters in motor before bolting heads down or you cant get them in . Former Ford mechanics advise.

Thanks for the tips. I've done both already. I think I'll poke NHRA on this though it could be a waste of time. Never know until you try.

The .430 lift rule is for FWD vehicles only. A Pinto is not a FWD car. Trust me, I helped write some of the rules many years ago. Jim

Ford would have to be behind you with that and I seriously doubt that will happen. Do yourself a favor, don't bother tech with such a silly idea. Because they will NEVER listen to you even if you have legitimate grievances.

How are you going to claim a truck engine when it doesn't show the truck in the guide for 77?

...And that, my friend is the least of your problem with that combo.

Easy answer is no.

I have always wondered why the rule was this way. If the rest of us have to work with much less lift why do they get extra lift just for being a truck or FWD?

OK, I'll tell you why. Back in the beginning of FWD the Chrysler 2.2 motors were all .430 lift which was about .050 more than the GM or Ford motors had and allowed the Chrysler's to dominate. It was decided in order to make the GM and Ford cars competitive they would just allow all FWD combos to have a .430 lift or stock lift, whatever was larger. I know the Caddy I ran all those yeas was .390 stock and it allowed us to have a .430 lift cam made by Crane. They latter decided to apply the same cam rule to the trucks. I wasn't involved in that decision. Jim

Jim is correct there. As an addendum , The indexes were so soft, in the beginning, in order to encourage participation, it didn't make sense to try to jerk all the the factory ratings around to get things equal..So, therefore ,the equal lift rule.
I'm not sure on the truck deal, but it probably was a similar situation.
That big ol' Cajun fella would know....

Ok it all seems fair. So to keep with their being fair to all are they going to give me the same 512/512 lift with the 2.085 int and 1.605 ex valves as the 352 Ford. It is the same HP as my 350 255 (280) small block
