Which transmission is legal to use behind a 351 Boss engine in a 1971 Mustang?
The blueprint from NHRA does not specify stick or auto.

Stick only, is what I believe to be the restriction Hans. When you review the guide, the 330hp combo is listed exclusively for the Boss 351 as a unique body style and it was not available with an automatic.......at least that's my interpretation.

The 1972 low compression HO is a different story.

Dave is correct the Boss combo is a stick only.

My question would be, where do you find that info though? Are there more spec's than are what's online?

Example, carb ford 2bbl "all 7200". Where do I find out what that means or what # I should be looking for? Write a letter?

It takes a little finesse and reading between the lines sometimes to interpret the information from the Class Guides/ Tech Bulletins. In the case of the '71 Boss 351/330 Ford, look at the Tech Bulletin for 1971 Ford engines. Under the column for carburetor, you will note that the make (Autolite/Holley) and manufacturers id numbers (D1ZF-FA, D0ZF-Z) are given. To the side of the carb id number is the application (auto or manual) and in this case the listing is for "SM only" (sychromesh, or manual transmission, only). That tells you there is no listing for an automatic transmission application. For some engines, there may be "Auto only" (look at the 429/320 or 429/360 on the same 1971 Ford Tech Bulletin), which means the engine was not available with a manual transmission. In cases where no transmission application is given . . . well, you can make a case for either or both.

The other example you listed for 2-bbl "all 7200", that is a Motorcraft carburetor model designation and indicates the carburetor that is accepted. Most of the time, a specific carb id is listed, but sometimes the manufacturer and just the model of carb used is listed. A Motorcraft model 7200 series is the variable venturi carbs they brought out in the mid-1970s.

You have to be familiar with lots of stuff to be able to accurately and completely read and understand the manuals. Unfortunate, but that's the case.
