Engler's Junk Yard in PA
 

Have you been there. I went for the first time today, WOW 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and more. The last yard I knew of like that was in South Hampton Long Island about 30 years ago. The owner is turning 65 soon and will start crushing the cars very soon. He is starting with the worthless vans and rotted junk. Walking through the yard for an hour or so I realized how much I still love old cars, Edsels and 62 Belvederes were jumping at me all over. The place is only 8 miles from my house so I'll be making a trip back soon, sorry I waited so long.

At one time yards like that were a common sight in PA. I can remember visiting a place near Bethlehem in the early 70's when the prices were still reasonable. Bought a 56 Ford Tudor Wagon with a 272 in it for $50, but had to pass on a 49 Studebaker 1/2 ton because I could only fit one vehicle on the ramp truck. I still wish I had the room to store all my "classics"! :(

Paul I was there in Nov. of last year.Did you see the AMC's?There's quite a few.Once the
weeds start to come back so will the bees and the snakes and other creatures in the area.Great picking though.Too bad he's shutting it down in the near future.

Onee of the 60 or so cars I've had in my life was a '58 Edsel Citation Convertible-one of 930 made. It was a tired old daily driver when I saw it, I asked the owner what he was going to do with it, he said to give him $400.00 for it, I did, it lived at my house for a few years, then I sold it to a collector who had it for almost 30 years until he sold it to another collector in Pennsylvania. It still lives and has a good home. Those old yards are irreplaceable. Few survive today.

Oh man, does this thread bring back memories of a misspent youth. There was an abandoned old junkyard remnants in my home town. Most vivid memory is of finding Liberty aircraft engine next to a 30s vintage bus body. Remember another junkyard with the "engine pile", flathead fords,flathead straight sixes and eights just in a big pile. Ah, the old days.

I remember a yard just south of Louisville. There were many treasures there that I was going to get parts from...someday. Then came the day I went to get a few parts and the cars were gone, replaced with later model pieces.

When I asked the owner why he scrapped such valuable cars, he replied, "If the cars had such great parts you should have got them when you first saw them. This place is a business, not a storage lot for your dreams!"

Hindsight is always 20-20. We used to have a wrecking yard in
Santa Ana that back in the 80's had lots of 67/68/69 Plymouth
Barracuda's. I picked some small trim and interior parts, but if
I had the forthought and storage space I would have pulled fenders
and doors, etc, etc.

Now when I go to a Ecology Center or Pick-A-Part yard it is very
very rare to see a Duster, Volare or anything not FWD.
