Dana 60 Gear Lube ??
How little can you get away with a Dana 60? Thanks

Re: Dana 60 Gear Lube ??
Ed, anything less than 3 1/2 pints and I had front pinion bearing spalling.
slowed down and leaked everywhere with more than 2 1/2 quarts. |
Re: Dana 60 Gear Lube ??
Ed, I think 1.5 quarts would be fine. If it were mine I would run 80/90 GL5 conventional oil.

Re: Dana 60 Gear Lube ??
I've found a substantial temperature reduction when running 75w140 GL5 synthetic oil over the conventional 80-90. .......Worth a couple of hundredths on my car. and wear was ok.
Different type of racing, but I have a few mud drag racers who swear that the best lube for wear and durability is the Moroso climbing gear lube. |

I run 2 qts of valvoline synthetic gear lube in my Dana. The gear life is forever although I run a powerglide.I run a 6.17 gear. I saw no advantage to running less lube. The dana did not hold up in my car with the stick. I would recommend a cover that incorporates a brace. I saw the pics that you posted about the damage to your dana. My experiance with a stick was similar with the side shims eaten up. Broken caps etc. I installed steel caps and studs on the spool bearings. I have Strange spool and axles. Mike |
Re: Dana 60 Gear Lube ??
I use 1 qt of Lubricating Engineers lube. Sticky purple stuff. I have thousands of runs with a stick never a problem.

Re: Dana 60 Gear Lube ??
In my Dana,I always used the factory recommended fill.I used conventional gear lube in the past but am switching to 75w140 synthetic with the new gear set,and I'll fill it to the factory specs.

Re: Dana 60 Gear Lube ??
I have a Dana 60 in my 10.0 ET,132MPH bracket car, with a Jerico 4 speed. I use the Redline "heavy shockproof" synthetic 90-140 gearoil (2 quarts), after after 9 years, the Richmond 4.88 Pro gears still look great. Of course, when you get into the really low gearing (5.86, 6.17 or so) gear life is much shorter, especially in a heavy car.
