Trailer setup
 

Finally got my trailer setup the way I wanted it. May not be the same as some of you would have set it up, but here is how mine is.

It is a 2011 Quality 18 ft dovetail open trailer,rated at 7k lbs. It has full deck and electric brakes on both axles.On the tongue, I mounted an Owens diamond plate box. It is mounted on a raised platform to clear the handle of the tongue jack when in use. Inside the box is a Superwinch UT3000 winch and enough storage room for my tie downs, trailer ball lock or ball mount depending on if the trailer is hooked up or not and tools,misc,etc. I know I have seen bigger boxes set up, but this does me for right now. Any extras I can throw in the truck bed. The truck is wired with the power connector kit from Superwinch so I can plug in the winch harness under the truck bumper. At the rear of the trailer, I have wired a 4 way trailer plug to hook the car into the lighting of the trailer. The car lights have the trailer 4 way and the car harness will have a vehicle side 4 way. This way I can either plug the car into the trailer or car harness.

This is how I wired the car to the trailer. I used 4 way trailer plugs. Vehicle side plug on the trailer and will add a second vehicle side plug inside the car on the vehicle side harness. The harness at the car tail lights will have a trailer side plug. This way I can plug the tail lights of the car into the trailer when towing or plug them into the vehicle harness for tail lights at the track.

Very nice.The only change I'd make is to put an electrical connector on the front of the box for the winch.Looks better than the wire going over the lip of the box into it.

Rick,

My wiring for my winch (which is portable) is done with a 7 pin connector
(even though it only uses 2 wires) so I just plug it into the trucks 7 pin
connector for power when I need to use the winch.

I like how your box is mounted up to clear the jack handle.

Ed, not exactly, you were telling Rich to add a connector through the side
of his metal box which I agree would look neater, but for as often as the
winch gets used it probably does not matter since it is stored away when
towing down the road.

Phil, I originally thought of wiring the winch through the 7 way, but wasn't sure about the amps going through it when the winch is running. I found the kit I used at Superwinch, so I know the wires / plug are the proper size and will handle the current.

Ed, I thought if the winch leads were not long enough to reach the truck bumper, I was going to run them out the bottom of the box. But it worked out they are long enough, even if they do over the top of the box. I figured I would only have to worry about plugging the winch in when I need to use it. Hopefully after the car is done, I can just drive it on the trailer, :)
