Dana 60 question/problem

I was simply going to put some new Royal Purple in the rear end today and found this when I removed the cover. Nothing is bound up. It moves freely. It is real thin like a shim. What would cause this? I've never had this apart before. I've run this car 3 years never a problem. Thanks. Ed

Looks like maybe the bearing is loose on the spool.

and or maybe you used the wrong shims in your assembly, center hole/opening that slips over spool too big and slipped out when you let it fly!!!

not enough side preload also it might be worth pulling the axles and seeing if the bearing is to loose on the carrier ,,,some one could have honed the bearing out to set the side preload with having to press the bearing on and off gmonde

Ed, I still have my case strecher I built to set up Dana rears. It makes setting side pre load easy. Looks like the shim between the spool and bearing let go, spun out.
Bearing could have failed and let the pre load go. That is the side that takes the biggest load on the hit...At one time Dana's were all we could get to stay in our 12 and 13 lb per cu in Modified cars when you let out the clutch @ 10,000. 6.50 and 6.17 gears lasted nearly 50 runs. Give me a call if you need any help/tips.

I bought this car 3 years ago and have never touched the rear end.

Thanks for the replies. I have never touched the rear end since I bought the car. I will pull it apart and see if the bearing is bad or what. Adger what is your number? Ed

Re: Dana 60 question/problem

Ed,

I have a dana in my car also and years back I also ran with a stick. This was the norm. With the open back of the case there is no support. The case just keeps spreading. There are some good covers out now that incorporate a brace across the back of the housing.I think its LPW that makes them. I did not have the good clutch like now thats probably why you are getting better life. When the case spreads the preload comes off of the bearings and the side shims start to rotate thus causing the issue in the photo. I now run an auto so no more issues with the dana.

Ed,
You have a PM with my contacts
Sorry I have to be careful.
I don't want to violate any rules and get kicked off.
I can take a couple of pictures and show you how this spreader works.
You may want to build one or I could ship it to you. Eveyone that owns a 12 bolt or Dana needs to own one.
