AOD Trans.. ever been successful?
I am thinking about building a stocker out of my mustang 5.0 and was thinking about sticking with the AOD transmission, slightly beefed up. Has anyone ever done it? Aside form Lentech Automatics in Canada, I haven't really found anyone who specializes in making these things work.

Re: AOD Trans.. ever been successful?
used to run one in my car. Had the trans rebuilt with a transgo shift kit and a PTC cpnverter. The trans shifted itself, I just put the selector in D. Mine was the original 84 trans which was the two piece input shaft. The 2-3 shift loses alot of rpm if you keep this type. (which I did)
I am not sure if the newer cars had the two piece input shaft. Lentech kits change then to one piece input shaft. The trans seemed pretty tough, but I think it took alot of power to run it. |
Re: AOD Trans.. ever been successful?
Yes I am running a good Lentech valve body now which I can shift, along with an Art Carr non-lockup converter and a good input shaft from art carr. I just want to know if the AODs are tolerable for racing or are they inefficient and too heavy. I won't be making too much hp (probably about 300?) and am not looking to set any records just want to run a few tenths under the index.

Re: AOD Trans.. ever been successful?
Ran an AODE in my 95 Mustang for a season. E shifted it, had a 2.84 low gear set, worked well but I know it is waaaaaaaaaay heavy with lots of extra nonsense inside that we do not need. Installing a C4 as we speak. I can tell you that a C4 is exactly 50lbs lighter than the AODE and the 8" convertor that I will run is 6lbs lighter than the 9.5" that I had in the AODE. Had the indexes been left alone, I would have stuck with the AODE. I believe the C4 should be worth .10-.15.

Re: AOD Trans.. ever been successful?
I'm in a similar situation building a AOD based stocker. It will run in IHRA pure stock without issues but NHRA indexes are pretty tough. I'm not saying it can't be done but you will need to work hard to match the et of a C4. I've also read 0.10 et loss for AOD vs. C4 but haven't personally seen it. Anyhow, if you haven't already you want to head over to www.clickclickracing.com to get all your questions answered.
Good luck with your project. |
Re: AOD Trans.. ever been successful?
Bobby,
if you already have the lentech valve body and the one piece converter, I don't think I would spend the money to put in a C-4. Unless I was going with a full race C-4 , I wouldn't do it. |
Re: AOD Trans.. ever been successful?
Had Lentech AOD solid input shaft & alabama converter concepts custom converter in my 88 5.0 stock bottom end with b cam & patriot heads..ran 12.90...switched to c4 & ati converter no other changes & car ran 11.70...grant it new converter stalls at 3000 old stalled at 2000 but car is much quicker (1.67 60' compared to 2.05) but also picked up over 4 mph & is way more consistent

Re: AOD Trans.. ever been successful?
Less rotating mass = faster et. Run the C-4
