68 Camaro tire recommendation

I bought a 68 Camaro for the kid to start playing with. Just trying to get some opinions on biggest tire size without cutting the quarter panels. It is just a bracket car I would guess is about 3200#. I already have 8" welds for it.
Radial or not?
Thanks

It seems to me that you already made that decision by going with an 8" rim. So at this point i would go with a 9" wide tire and depending on the gear ratio maybe a 30" tall tire (my favorite size tire because stockers are WAY COOL !) if wheel well clearance will allow. Good luck and keep it shiny side UP !

Re: 68 Camaro tire recommendation

Just went thru this recently, getting my 67 Firebird stocker on the track. I did not want to cut anything. I have 2 sets of weld wheels. 8" rim, 4.5 back space will fit and looks better, but tight on the back... make sure you have all metal straight in upper wheel well, and clean, so no rubbing on inside of tire. 3.5 backspace sticks out a little more than I like, but makes it easy. Some other brands have a 4" back, would work good I think.

Bias tire, I am running MT 28x10.5. Also have a set of MT 29.5x9's mounted. Same section width on both, but the 29.5 grows too much in the quarter, and rubs on tread, front of fender. Have been 115mph with the 28 and no issues. they are listed as 88" and 90" circumference respectfully, if I remember right.

Radial, they do not grow... if they fit, you are good. The 92.5" Hoosier and the 93" MT radials both work. All listed as 30x9's, but Hoosier has a 92.5 and a 94 circumference tire. The 94" is just a little too tight for me.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

If it is just a part time racer and not a lot of power, just stick with the 28x9.
15x8 with a 4.5" backspace with stock width rear end.
No rubbing issues. A 29 or 29.5 should work, but will lower the gear ratio number.

The motor is a 355, it ran 11.10 in a 69 Camaro 4.56 gear.
I do not want want to cut the wheel well. I think a 29X9 on it will work without cutting. This new car has a 4.56 in it as well. Just trying to get ideas for what has worked for others.
Thanks

29x9 should work.... 1 thing I learned this year is tire compound means A LOT! My car @ the local "slick" track with the M/T Radial would NOT hook! 1 time it would then the next 3 it would not. I put a set of Hoosier CO6 radials on & it has not spun the tires the 1st time! Just an FYI ;)
