How much should an alternator put out (amps) in order to run an MSD system(6al or ditital 7)????

it only needs to put out enough to keep the battery charged.... the ignition runs off of the battery. If the battery is charged to capacity then you shouldn't need an alternator on at least 4 passes back to back type runs.

are the amps or the volts more important? My alt is puting out 40.6 amps and 14.08 volts at 2000 rpm. The box says it is a 50 amp alt!

How did you measure 40 amps ? If the load on the alternator is lower than 50 amps , then that's all it will put out . I think a MSD-7AL uses about 12 amps, depends on the rpm .

Hooked out tester up then it said to bring rpm up to 2000 rpm and hold (approx 30sec) then it said to let idle (again approx 30 sec) test done. And this was the reading I got>

And the idle amps were around 29

That sounds pretty normal....assuming you tested it load free?
