I saw this ad on RJ. Is that what they are really worth? I have a set for sale. - Tom

Many sets on eBay right now from 80.00 a head to 2500.00 a set.

A primo set, fresh and unmolested, with matching date codes, will bring $3500 or more, if the buyer needs that particular date code. If they are 391 or 858 heads.

Those are 840 heads, and won't bring as much, maybe $1500 or more, if they were in the condition as described above, and if the buyer needed that date code.

Those heads appear to have been raced, they look like they have aluminum retainers, and there's no telling what has been done to them. Maybe $1K, but not until a smart buyer knew more about them. Those are cheap rockers, and I wouldn't be surprised to find those heads have been mauled. Sounds like the seller does not know.

Alan if you remember a few years back we sold a set of date code correct 840's for $3000 to a guy doing a restoration, and he was happy to get them

Like I said if the heads are in real nice condition (yours were) and the buyer happens to need that particular date code (your buyer did need that code), they can bring $1500 or more. You came across the ideal situation, and it happened before the last big downturn in the economy. It worked out well for you, too.

I guess what I should do is get a picture of them and put them on the classified section. Are they in demand for race motors or for someone restoring an old Vette? in any event, I appreciate all your help. - Tom

The 840 heads are some of the most commonly used cast iron closed chamber rectangle port heads from 67 to 69, on Chevelles, Impalas, Camaros, and Corvettes. They are pretty popular with racers as well as restoration people.

As I said, how fast they sell and what they bring depends a lot upon the condition. Racers are not as hung up on a particular date code or whether the pair has matching date codes. Racers are more concerned about the condition of the heads, the less work they've had done the better, if they've been ported at all, been radically milled, or had bigger valves put in them, racers don't want them. And racers often won't pay a big price for a set of plain stock heads. Note, there's a difference between stock heads, and heads built for Stock Eliminator.

The restoration guys are more concerned with the date codes, they need a matched pair, with date codes on each head within a week of each other at least, the same day is ideal, in a certain range, usually 30 days, some will go as far as 60 or 90 days. For example, a guy restoring a car built in March of 69 will want castings within a day or two of each other, in January or February of 69. They can't use a set cast after March of 69, or before October of 68. That's why I said that, to get a premium price, you need a nice set of heads, and they need to have matching date codes a buyer with money needs when you have them for sale. If the guy in my example hasn't found any heads to go on his project for a year, he's getting to the poiunt where he has to have a set, and your heads are a nice pair of February 69 heads, you can name your price, within reason. But if your heads are not matched, and/or cast after March 69 or before October of 68, they're not worth a thing to him.

Chad gave a perfect example. Their heads were in excellent shape, by a well known shop, with very close date codes. Heads were bringing better money than they are now, way better. And they found a guy who needed a set of heads with that casting number and those date codes. And the guy had money to spend. So they got a great price for their heads.

I have a question too about a reasonable value on a couple of sets of SB Chevy heads.

What engine & body style were these heads on. The first set is casting number 3731539 dated B157. The second set of heads are casting number 3703523 dated E45. Any body have a clue. what is the going rate for each pair of heads.

Thanks for looking,

Ron

Apparently theres been a change of domain names or sites. The mortec site I used to go to is no longer there. I tried alternate spellings and a different site comes up.
Maybe someone out there knows where the site formerly known as mortec .com is.
Sorry for the inconvenience,,,it caught me by surprise also.
