SS 350/295hp pistons
 

i have and older 2 ring set weighing 389 grms. bare. pin is 86 grms. are those weights anywhere near today's bill miller ultalite's weight? trying to piece togeather a motor hoping mine will work. thankx.

Thats not too far off. The new set that I got from Patterson BME 4.070 bore 340 grams as I remember the pins were right at 80 grams. Crower sportsman rods 565 grams. You should run good with that set of pistons.

49 on the pistons & 6 on the pin...55 grms. total...thats a lot !!!

Actually the new rod, piston and pin combo that I put in had a bob weight a little heaver than the one I was running. The pistons and pins weighed about the same but the rod is about 30 grams heavier. the engine ran quicker after the rebuild as expected. The rest of the supporting cast is of more importance as to how the car will run, Heads ,intake, cam selection, car set up. I would run those pistons if they are in good condition.

i see now about the rest of the combo. ill check crower for legal sportsman rods as i cant justify the price of manley units....now what about my preped cast crank @ 8000? maybe i should put my money on a 2k crankshaft. that would make a safe assembly @ that engine speed?

Shop ebay for new Oliver or Manley rods. I have two sets of Oliver Rods I bought, one new set and one dyno session set. I think I have about $1K total invested. Just search "Billet 5.700"

I am using the crower sportsman thru bolt rods. I bought my rods from a friend. he bought them and ended up using a different combo. When I checked the rods were $650 from summit. I think you would have to go direct to crower for the rod with an .875 pin.

I dont think you would have any problem with your cast crank. My friend that runs a GT/EA firebird uses a cast crank. It has alot of runs with no issues. He has a very heavy bob weight. Some pistons about like yours and an old set of Summit rods. His engine has been very reliable and runs decent. FYI there was a set of the summit rods for sale on this site for $100 with 40 runs. They would be good for your set up.

There are times when a little extra weight in a piston will help in making the rings more stable. That means better ring seal. Even heavier-stronger pins help the same way. Don't get hung up about the a few grams of weight. It might actually help.
