Ford Stocker idea?
My brother has a 1964 Ford falcon and he is turning it into a drag car, I told him he should build a stocker with a 289. An engine builder I know said if its a 2bbl car it not a good combo and that what it is. Does anyone run this combo and if so how well does it run. The car can also be a 65 falcon.

Re: Ford Stocker idea?
Was the 271 hp 289 Hi-Po available in the Falcon in 64'? I know it was in the Fairlane and that was a 4bbl, 4spd. combo. I've always liked the bodystyle of the 64-65 Falcon hardtops,,there were some famous ones back in the mid 60s,,Phil Bonner's comes to mind. Go find an old Super Stock and Drag Illustrated magazine from the 64-65 era and there'll probably be a photo of it pulling the front wheels up. My 2 cents.

Re: Ford Stocker idea?
I looked in the class. guide and the 271hp 289 was not listed for the falcon only the 200hp motor and I'am sure that is a 2bbl.

Re: Ford Stocker idea?
You would want to run a 289/225 289 4V. If that makes you a '65 Falcoln, then so be it.
The 289/271 is way over rated from what I can see and have heard from Ford guys way more knowledgeable than I. Cool cars! |
Re: Ford Stocker idea?
Phil Bonner's and others were transplant cars with FE power 427 Highrisers

Re: Ford Stocker idea?
The Falcon never had a 4bbl V8 option. Mustang, Fairlane, and Comet all had 4bbl.

Re: Ford Stocker idea?
Do any Ford guys run a 289/271 in S/SS?

Re: Ford Stocker idea?
1964 Falcon 260 V8 only @ 164 HP. Must run 2 speed auto not a C4 and a Motorcraft 1.01 carb (240cfm) which is too small. Could run as 4 speed manual trans, but with small carb it won't rpm. 1965 Falcon is 195/200HP 289 V8 with a 1.08 carb (287cfm) better but don't think it would be fast. At least you can run a C4 in 1965 Falcons. Heads are small and CR not high. 260 engine requires a 5 bolt bellhousing and a while back I tried to find one, no aftermarket. IMHO it might run the index but not much more. I almost forgot all 260/289 2bbl engines only get a .370" lif camshaft. I'd love to see it as I ran those combos back in the 1960's when new, but I don't believe it to be the car for Stock unless it lost 10 to15 HP.
Good luck, Fred |

I don't know of any in recent times, when you look at the engine specs (especially in SS) there is no advantage to the 271hp. In Superstock you can run a 64 Comet 289 which usus the same carb as the H-Po (600 cfm) and only has slightly lower compression, the Comet is rated at 205 in Stock and 220 in Superstock verses 271 hp on the Hi-Po. The Mustang 289's use a slightly smaller carb but as you can see looking the current race cars they are very competitive. You could use either the Mustang or the Comet version of the 289 and run in SS/GT but if you want to stay in Stock you are stuck with the 2bbl |
