gearing for lowest ET?

how much past your peak hp do you gear for to get the lowest ET. i've heard that anything past the 1/8 and the engine is got it's tongue hanging out.

Depends on what the power curve of the engine is. If HP drops like a rock. very little might even be too much.
You can over gear in the 1/8 and not have enough wheel speed leaving or have a spin problem.. Just get in high a little after the 330 is what most of the quickest Comp guys do. But you better have something that has some beans to do that!!!

what do you call "drops like a rock". 10 to 15HP say at 500 rpm past peak HP??

Some Pontiac engines, for example, may be something that would "drop like a rock" if you over gear. High torque, poor flowing heads would not like over zealous gearing.
If in doubt, it is far greater to under gear it than over gear it.

Our 6 cyl is WAY over geared ! 5.13 with a 2.08 low (P/G) and 26" tall tires....1000' it was done but it needed all that gear to get it off the line & moving ;) the 1bbl carb acted like cruse control it would just pull up to 5800 & run :)
