Roll bar painting question?
 

I would like to paint my roll cage myself. What products would you recommend for painting? I have heard that Eastwood makes a nice paint. I have also heard that Rust-o-lium applied with a spong brush works well. I will have one week to paint my cage and install my interior when I get it back, so the paint needs to cure within 3 days.

Larry,

I just masked off the glass on my Duster and used Rustoleum gloss
black spray cans to do my roll bar. I like the idea of the foam brushes
if you have the time for that.

Larry, we have found the Rustoleum and the foam brush to be the best way with the least mess, usually two coats will do a very nice job. The paints flows nice and dries in about a day. I think spraying turns out a little nicer but takes alot of taping and masking to do a nice clean job

I also used Rustoleum, but didn't thin it and the foam brush drug the paint around alot. Sort of like streaks. A painter that I know said that I should have thinned it out a little and it would not have done that.
It turned out very nice after a second coat.
No primer. I cleaned it with Acryliclean wax/grease remover.

You may want to consider Rustoleum Hammerite it brushes on and develops its own texture. No brush marks at all.

I just did a complete roll-cage in a Duster with the Rust-o-leum, Hammer finish black. This turned out super. Get a quart of the paint about $14, will be more than enough, I bought a pack of two small foam rollers, the package is the tray and a pack of two foam 1" brushes. Painting was simple and easy, even the to bars back to the trunk area. Used the foam brushes to get the gusset plates and tight areas then rolled the paint on.

A few years ago I was told the tech department does not like hammer tone type finishes in either paint or powder coating. While it is legal and will pass, the reason they do not like that rough finish is its too hard to see a crack that could develop somewhere in a tube or at a weld.

Hmmm... I can see that, I also see that painting it in Hammer finish would look a)great b)be a pain, not so much as wrinkle to tech but that could be an issue.

How bout some wood grain contact paper :D I saw an ENTIRE Dodge neon done with it inside and out....it was ...... interesting.....

I did mine "the hard way" with etching primer, it bonds really nice, then Urethane with a flattening agent, I didnt get it as flat as aI wanted.
