Chrome cage

I am having a new cage put on the roadster and was wondering if you were still allowed to chrome them if anyone has the answer please let me know. I thought i heard something a while back about not being able to do that anymore.

Re: Chrome cage

Older cars that were built prior to the implementation of the SFI spec which prohibits chroming are grandfathered. ....They still need to sonic test ok , which some won't. ...............I just compleated updating a roadster with a chrome cage. .......If you ever saw the inside of some chrome cages, you would understand why it is now prohibited. .....The chemicals used in the plating peocess can never be compleatly neutralized, so over time the tubing wil rust and get thinner.........Tom

Re: Chrome cage

Tom,
You're absolutely right on the money. I had a grandfathered chrome cage several years ago, when we cut it off to upgrade we found degradetion in several places. Primary concern for NHRA is the roadsters due to taller cages. I've seen more than one fail during a crash.

Re: Chrome cage

Barney, That looks way better than any "chrome " powder coating I've had done !....Was it actually powder ,or the SpectraChrome process? .....I've seen some motorcycle parts done in SpectraChrome ,and they really do appear to be chrome plated. ......Tom

Re: Chrome cage

Tom, they said it is a powder coating process. It is as nice as chrome. We was going to do the cage on my new American but I decided not to.
