roll bar

almost ready to start the roll bar in my 97 Firebird and was wondering if anyone knows the weight saving CM to MS and the cost difference. Is the CM worth the price ? Mike

Check with S&W their bars fit very good and are resonable. On my car the mild steel was about 50 pounds heavier. But the chromemoly was more than twice the price, and it limited who could install it.

Good morning, Mike,

Yes. Not only is it lighter, it is less bulky and it's stronger, plus it allows you a margin of flexibility in deciding where to put the weight. There is also a consideration of resale value.

Worth the price and the weight. ....Late F body is 45-50# for a cage,25-28# for a rollbar. .....I've used a lot of S&W'S kits,it's not worth the time for me to bend one custom since theirs fit well.........Tom

And less cracks in the body with CM also. Like Chuck said, keep it light and strong so you can place the weight where you want it. Amazing what an extra 50#'s in the trunk will do for traction!

That's probably the best reason for moly. Keep in mind if you got a 1' piece 1-5/8" BAR stock in moly and mild steel they would both weigh the same. But since chrome moly is much stronger the NHRA & IHRA allow moly cages to be made of tubing that is 34% thinner than it's mild steel counterpart (.083" wall vs .118" wall) Therefore a moly cage will be 34% lighter than mild.

Two other things to keep in mind - since moly is lighter - shipping cost on the kit are lass but since it requires TIG welding, unless you can weld it yourself , installation cost are bound to be higher.
