Re: Super Comp License
Honestly... if you are a new drag racer, please get some seat time before jumping into S/C.
We've all been beginners at one time. If you've never driven a drag car or are graduated from JR dragster, I'd recommend going to the track in an every day car for test n tune or street legal class racing. Get some seat time and experience. There is nothing scarier than an inexperienced driver lined up next to you during a race (one nearly killed me, so I know). |
Re: Super Comp License
SINCE YOU DO NOT CURRENTLY HAVE ANY NHRA/IHRA LICENSES TAKE YOUR PERSONAL VEHICLE TO THE TRACK TO GET STARTED-- I WOULD STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO GET USED TO BOTH PREPPING/STAGING A CAR---HOW THE TREE FUNCTIONS/REACTION TIMES ETC. THE SPEED/SENSATIONS OF AND SOUNDS OF GOING FAST AND GRADUALLY WORK YOUR WAY UP TO A FASTER RIDE---I HAVE BOTH A COMP ELIMINATOR AS WELL AS A --SUPER COMP- AND STOCK LICENSE HAVE HAD IT FOR 35+ YEARS---HONESTLY I WOULD NOT SIGN OFF ON YOUR LICENSE TO DRIVE A 150 MPH+++ CAR AT THIS POINT DUE TO YOUR INEXPERIENCE IN RACING EVEN IF YOU COULD DEMONSTRATE TO ME AN ABILITY TO MAYBE HANDLE A CAR AT THE TIME OF TESTING--I DO NOT THINK TOO MANY OTHERS WILL SIGN OFF AT THIS TIME EITHER--COMP 387
SORRY for the caps at work here we always type everything in CAPS--- |
Re: Super Comp License
I would focus on bracket racing, first at your local track, then maybe at more tracks in the region. Introduce yourself to local racers in the classes you want to race, and ask questions while being respectful of their time. Between rounds in an obvious thrash is a bad time! Once you get to know these people, MAYBE one of them will let you borrow their car for licensing passes. I have seen it done before. I got my SG license when I was 20, but it was in my own car that I scrimped and saved for (and bought a lot of cheap hand-me-down parts for). Around here the more serious class racers (Stk/SS & SG/SC) don't do much local bracket racing anymore, so you may have to go to some divisional events to meet these people. You can also offer to help crew for them, starting with the simplest tasks. It would be a good way to learn the ropes.

Re: Super Comp License
Some excellent replies so far. Time at the track is the best way to start. Even in your daily driver. Then baby steps.
If you HAVE to have a license quick, you can't do better than Frank Hawley's schools. They do remote courses around the country, and it's the best $2k you'll spend if you really want to get in a car now. |
Re: Super Comp License
Chris I concur---pick a driving school butSTAY AWAY from Doug Foley's school-- he will milk you along and then tell you you need to make a few more runs @$100 per run after he runs out of time for the day---he always overbooks students for the number of cars he has available if the cars are not broken down---also I personally do not like his attitude at the school either.
Went to Hawleys school all the difference in the world between the 2----My 2Cents--Comp 387 |
Re: Super Comp License
The NHRA LICENSE!!! Smartie me !! i used to brag to my dad all the time (i was 17 now i am 29!!)about how much better i would be in the car than him,and well he proved me wrong!! he made me go to the doctor get a physical and then we loaded up and headed to trails on a weds night so i could get my super gas license,i was pumped and thought ohh yea it is easy....GUESS AGAIN! i did a good burnout and staged the car held it to the floor let go the tranny button and boom we were truckin!! i got scared and lifted before the 1/8 mile marker! i think i went 65 in the 1/4!! but each run i got faster then i said you know what i am not ready yet,so we de tuned the car and i 1/8 mile raced for 1 year before my dad would let me attempt to get my s/g license and trust me it paid off! alot of people think it is easy it proved me wrong! i always remember what my dad would tell me before he closed the door,he says "son, this car is not a toy,and it could kill ya" and everytime i race i never take it forgranted and never get too lax while driving...cus everyone knows **** happens to the best of the best!!...
But Good Luck On Getting You S/C License |
