front tires and spark plug wires
I was curious on what peoples thoughts were on the larger front tires. I know there is some gain in ET with a larger front tire and in my case it will help keep me green on a bottom bulb hit. If anyone knows what a typical gain is in ET on say going from a 26" or 27" tall tire to a 28" or 29" tall tire (adding about 2" to the height)...my guess would be about 2 or 3 hundreths.
Also, a different question is: what are people thoughts on the best spark plug wire (I see quite a few seem to run the large sized low resistance Moroso or MSD wires)...probably a minor gain if any, but I was cuirous. |
Re: front tires and spark plug wires
As far as spark plug wires go, I don't think that there's much if any HP gain, just less chance of cross fire, (arching).. Spelling might not be real good ! Smaller tires as you know = better reaction time, Hope this is some help. .John Lang........... I just thought of this ! If your plug wires are real crap your going to lose HP, so better plug wires, make more power!

Re: front tires and spark plug wires
There are many high quality wires to choose from, but I do like the Moroso low resistance ones. My favorites have been the Taylor low resistance Thundervolts. They hold up well too. Good wires aren't cheap though. One thhing I was told by both the Taylor and the MSD guys is to not overlook the coil wire. It is the one that gets beat up and will most likely need changing out more often than the plug wires. Especially with the high voltage MSD type ignitions. I don't know about any real hp gains. In my opinion if you cheap out on wires, I figure you are more likely to chase ignition problems when you least expect it.
I am sure there is someone who can calc the difference in tire size, but I think bigger is good if you can cut a light with them and in my case with a Chevy 2, still turn the wheel enough to make the turn off the track! :) |
Re: front tires and spark plug wires
I appreciate the feedback, I am probably going to get either the Moroso DS-2 fronts or M/T fronts (28" tall...I have 26" tall now). I really need a few hundredths ET and need to slow the reaction some, so this should help with both...I was just hoping someone might know specifically how much ET I might gain with the extra roll-out. This is a low 14 second car if that makes a difference.
Also, I am running a Mallory HEI distributor and I thought about switching to MSD distributor with a blaster 2 or 3 and a 6AL if it is worth anything (I only run at a max of 6000rpm though). |

Good choice on fronts, I thought I'd go with Hoosiers to match the slicks, but the Hoosier fronts do not last with M/T fronts. I'm going back to Mickeys. I like Taylor spiro core wires.

Re: front tires and spark plug wires
I've got a pair of almost new 28" Firestone fronts if you're interested.
