Hi-tech 80 year old rear axle!
I'm currently overhauling a differential for a 1929 GMC hack [taxi] chassis........80 years old ,and it proves once again that nothing today is really new. .......It 's a Timkin rear, 5.00 ratio, similar to a 9" in design. ....Thru bolt caps, trick bearing adjusters, a light weight ring gear with a load bolt and a pinion support that is such a nice casting ,it almost looks like it's billet ! ......I'm always fascinated by what was able to be designed and built without the aid of CAD/ CAM design software or CNC machines! .......offshore factories......Or Government Loans!!!!......The taxi is actually a movie car that appeared in the movie "It's A Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart!.......Tom

That's just plain cool !
and you're right, there's nothing new about much of this stuff. Like out beloved, super hi-tech "soft lock" clutches. The pressure plate is a virtual duplicate of what's in my stock 35 Ford 3W coupe. |

Aubrey,,,,Are you planning on making the trip to Mission Raceway for the "BC Nationals"? I'm hoping to go up there,,,if so, I'll look you up. I'd love to see that Bel-Air run.................Danny Durham

Re: Hi-tech 80 year old rear axle!
Thank YOU, Gearhead !
I'm watching the weather, saving money ( 1500 mile round trip @ 8 MPG on premium ! ) Got my car re-assembled last week. Drove it. Nothing to do ( except fatten up jetting for sea level ... it's tuned for 3500+ ft right now ) It's ready to go ! Just hope there's a little better traction at the track |
