351 w RPM
I have a stock rod 351 windsor (they were ground /peened etc.) have 558 gram piston 10.1 and a cast crank.
Should make between 500/ 550 hp. Will these rods hold and how much will the crank take...3300# car Thank you! PS... Thinking of going to Manley Pro series i beam rods....This is a spare motor and don't want to put much into it. RT |
Re: 351 w RPM
I'd estimate it be safe 7000-7500 rpm.350 chevy would live there if anything 351W has as strong if not stronger rotate assm. in stock form.If haven't put oil restrictor kit I'd consider that.

And a high pressure Oil Pump, don't forget the W has a 3" main dia.

Re: 351 w RPM
Cranks OK to 7000-7500, biggest problem is keeping rod bearing in one. Sorta long stroke narrow big Dia. bearing, bore big end doesn't like to stay round. This is from my personal exp. Joe

Re: 351 w RPM
What kind of balance do you have on it?
I'd say to keep it under 7000 if you want it to live. |
Re: 351 w RPM
Stock rod won't work...RPM sensitive... the piston weight, no mater what it is, will make the rod elongate at hi rpm and pinch the bearings at the parting line and starve it for oil and then ... ca boom. The stock rod is marginal to 6000. You really need after market rod that has more big end integrity...

Re: 351 w RPM
For what it's worth, I flat will not build a 351W with stock rods anymore. Every time In the past I let a customer talk me into it for a "low buck" circle track engine the rods have broken. As was stated before if you keep it below 6000 rpm it may last, awhile. A really good "low dollar" rod for these engines is a Eagle "SIR" series with ARP bolts. MUCH better rod than the factory piece. Hope this helps.

Re: 351 w RPM
I've got question if 351W rods marginal @6000 how can 351Cs live at 7000-8000 with shorter version of same rod?I've seen plenty of them ran 7000-8000 range and live. What did 4BBL 351C stock-super stock
combos run before aftermarket rods were legal,I know they did'nt stay 6000 and below if you try to run 4BBL 351C without going over 6000 your're wasting your time. By all means I'd run aftermarket rod since you can buy eagle SIR style etc. just few dollars more than prepping stock rod w/bolts,float pins,if you bushing them you'll spend more than aftermarket I-beam cost. Re: 351 w RPM
It was not the same rod just shorter! 351-c has a different journal dia (smaller) that 351-W
Alot of guy's used Boss 351 which had a magged rod, it was also a forging and special bolts. Quote:

Re: 351 w RPM
rod throw on crank is same size 351W-351C-351/400M but 351C/M 400M rod housing bore is ten thousands larger than 351W. So I guess 351 boss rod would be about like Chevy ''pink'' rod?
I've always liked 4 bbl 351C could have something to do with me loving RPM. Mike Taylor 3601 |
