Aluminum 8 3/4 Housing
Any thoughts on using Mopars' aluminum housing w/billet caps in a 440 Dart Stocker? Will the 742 hold the torque?

Re: Aluminum 8 3/4 Housing
I don't think NHRA would like that in Stock.

Re: Aluminum 8 3/4 Housing
Dusty,
You can use one in stock and MOPAR (if they are still in business) pays contingency. The problem is when you break a rear end it will usually break the aluminum housing. Been there done that. I asked several manufacturers if they can fix it and they said no ... they are about 11 lbs. lighter than the cast one and are not suppose to flex as much, but they are expensive and won't take the impact of a rear end breakage ... |
Re: Aluminum 8 3/4 Housing
Chuck, I asked NHRA about this a couple of year ago and they said no. I think I still have the letter some place. Maybe this has changed, but are you sure as I would like to use one.
Thanks Jerry |
Re: Aluminum 8 3/4 Housing
I ran one for over 3 years before I broke it ...

Re: Aluminum 8 3/4 Housing
If the aluminum center section is listed as a Stock class contingency item, it should indicate that it is legal for use in Stock. It is legal in IHRA and I've been using it for almost 2 seasons. I thought I would be hearing some noise and possibly replacing the ring & pinion by now, but it seems to be holding up rather well. I've only had high 1.40 60' times, usually 1.50-1.51, but I have to weigh 3,530+ lbs.
On a similar note, the Moser 8 3/4 housing has been approved by NHRA for Stock! http://www.dragracingonline.com/agen...0-xi_4-56.html |
Re: Aluminum 8 3/4 Housing
Are we talking about carriers or housings

Re: Aluminum 8 3/4 Housing
Regarding NHRA, maybe Evan Smith could chime in on the illegality of aluminum center sections.

Jeff,
That's a Ford and he is a technical expert who is a published author in National Dragster. Now my plan is to put a Ford 9" housing with a Strange Aluminum 12 bolt center section in our stocker and see if we can sell that to NHRA. Bob |
