Drop Per Coil Removed on Moroso Trick Springs
I am wondering if anyone could give me some guidance on shortening my front springs. Right now after settling for a couple days I need to drop the front end 2.5" and the springs have not been cut yet. The literature states removing 1/4 coil at a time but I am wondering if anyone has a rule of thumb on how much drop you get per 1/4 coil removed. They are such a pain to get in and out I would like to get it right on the next removal/install cycle.

You will most likely be better off going to softer springs. If you cut the ones you have the spring rate will go up and you will loose some weight transfer.

Re: Drop Per Coil Removed on Moroso Trick Springs
What is the free length of the spring? What is the installed height of the spring? I have found that if you reduce the free length of the spring by the amount that you want the installed height reduced will put it pretty close.
Here is an example for a spring with a free length of 16.625 that installed at a height of 11.0. I wanted an installed height of 10.25 so I needed a free length of 16.625-(11-10.25) = 15.875 It sounds to me like you have the wrong spring if you want to reduce the tire to fender distance by 2.5 inches. You will probably have to reduce the free length by about 1.25 which will increase your spring rate. What you need is a longer spring with less spring rate to give you the most "stored energy" at the ride height that you want. |
Re: Drop Per Coil Removed on Moroso Trick Springs
At this point I am not out anything to try and cut these down. They are the softest spring rate Moroso offers but they are about 4" longer than my stock springs that came out so they are getting compressed to the point where I can hardly get the spring compressor between the coils.
If they do not work out I will have some custom springs made since my application and weight falls in a place on the Moroso spring chart does not really have a spring for my front end weight. Thanks Chad |
Re: Drop Per Coil Removed on Moroso Trick Springs
Chad,
I had the same issue with the Moroso springs in my Camaro. Too tall to even get in place. I cut 1 full coil off and they worked good. Custom springs would be the way to go but that process takes more time. |
Re: Drop Per Coil Removed on Moroso Trick Springs
Chad what is your application and what Moroso part # did you buy? I wouldn't follow the Moroso guide to choosing springs. Call Gary Wisecarver or MPR to get the best spring rate for what you are doing.
I only cut 1/4 coil off (215LB spring on a BBC alum head camaro) of the Driver Side and almost 3/4 off of the passenger side if I remember correctly. It took 2 of us holding the spring compress in place on the spring and another working the air impact compressing the spring. What a pain in the rear it was. |
Re: Drop Per Coil Removed on Moroso Trick Springs
I talked with Moroso tech support and they told me to run the 47180 springs given my front end weight of 1810 lbs (without me in the car) in a 77 Camaro small block application. So that is what I went with.

make sure you fill all the fluids too before you get to carried away.

Re: Drop Per Coil Removed on Moroso Trick Springs
Well I went for it and cut a full coil out of the springs and reinstalled.
After sitting overnight the ride height is exactly where I wanted it to end up. Thanks to everyone who helped me out. Chad |
