NHRA Stock Eliminator Rear End Rules
I just twisted the stock housing on my 77 Camaro 8.5" GM 10 bolt. I am thinking of going 12 bolt as a replacement rear, but someday I hope to run this car as a stocker. Reading the NHRA rule book it is not black and white on swapping rear ends. "Original rear end may be replaced with another of the same type from the automobile manufacturer". Does this mean I have to run a 8.5" 10 bolt since this was the only option for my car or can I go to another GM rear (ie 12 bolt)?
Also, does the rear housing have to be an OEM housing or could a guy use a Moser 12 bolt aftermarket (stock type) housing? Any insight into this rule would be appreciated. Thanks, Chad |
Re: NHRA Stock Eliminator Rear End Rules
you are fine to upgrade the rear. A GM 12 bolt is fine or Moser or Strange replacements all are legal. It just has to be a GM design.

Re: NHRA Stock Eliminator Rear End Rules
has to be same width as factory. Has to have c-clip eliminator axles.
axles can be gun drilled, flange can be scalloped, spool installed. |
Re: NHRA Stock Eliminator Rear End Rules
Thanks for the insight on the rule. Looks like a 12 bolt is in my future.

Re: NHRA Stock Eliminator Rear End Rules
If you intend to buy a new 12 bolt, consider buying it through the Disabled Youth Awareness website. You'll get a discount, and you will help some disabled child get a chance to see the races. Everybody could use a little good Karma.

Re: NHRA Stock Eliminator Rear End Rules
I have a 12 bolt to fit your car. I did the same as you went from a 10 bolt to the 12 bolt. I had it in a 74 camaro. All of the rears form 70-81 are the same width. It has moser 33 spline axles, and spool, with ford type housing ends( because c-clip eliminator is not the way to go) with drum brakes, 4.88 pro gear, and solid pinion spacer, Also has moser aluminum bearing support cover. Give me a call if you are interested.

Re: NHRA Stock Eliminator Rear End Rules
Alex, would that fit a 70 Nova monoleaf setup? I may have an interested buyer.

Re: NHRA Stock Eliminator Rear End Rules
Dave -
Too wide for a Nova...the Novas were the same width as the first-gen Camaros. |
Re: NHRA Stock Eliminator Rear End Rules
Thanks for the offer Alex. I made some calls last night and have tracked down a 12 bolt locally.
