been told too many things bout this combo...
88 mustang LX COUPE not hatch
1986 SVO 4cyl Turbo - stock t-5 5 speed 4 lug front and rear (can it be swapped to 5 lug?) 8.8 rear end with 4.30 gears and 31 spline axles fuel cell cage still has full interior minus rear seats no heater or anything like that ive been told its SS/GT which is a V8 class only, ive been told SS/MS and ive been told by others it would have to be a pro car or comp because the motor only came in a hatchback car... now my question is if Peter Biondo can run a Cobalt with a 325ci chevy motor (Front wheel drive converted to RWD, backhalfed, etc etc) in SS/BS why cant I run a 4 cyl turbo motor which is STOCK in a mustang, in SS/M? input? |

The classification sheets only show the SVO for 1984 and 1985. With the exception of the Thunderbird, the classification sheets do not show a turbo 4 cylinder for 1986 in the Mustang body. All standard Super Stock cars, must be the same model/engine combination as shown in the classification sheets. Therefore, you can only run a 1984-1985 SVO in either Stock or the non-modified Super Stock class. Peter's car is a MODIFIED class Super Stock...in a nut shell...a Super Stock car running a Comp Eliminator engine. I do not have my rule book with me, however, there was, or still, a class that was formerly in the SS/Modified Compact that allowed the use of a 4 cytlinder engine with Turbo. It was either in 2005 or 2006, that NHRA eliminated the Modified Compact class and moved the cars to Modified Stock. However, not having the rule book handy, I do not know if they kept the Turbo class or moved it to Comp Eliminator....and if they moved the class to Comp...you better have lots of $$$$ to be able to run in the 7's and 175+ MPH |
Re: been told too many things bout this combo...
i dont get it. So in super stock i can ONLY run a 84-85 SVO mustang, the motor can not be in a 88 notch back?
and why would the 4cyl turbo be in a different class than the V8? it was still a stock option for the mustangs. so why couldnt i run the car in a modified Super Stock class? its not a honda, or any kinda import, so i dont see why it would be modified compact as it is still a mustang. I have read the rule book, 2007, but i dont see anything about the turbo cars. |
Re: been told too many things bout this combo...
5 lug axle is easy conversion. You need axles with C-CLip eliminators, so order 5 lug axles. (5 x 4.5) ford bolt pattern. 94 and newer mustangs have 5 lugs, so get a set of rear drums for them if it still has drum brakes.
most racers hace converted to rear disks. order what you want, or re-drill the rotors. same with the fronts. if you have stock brakes, Ford Racing makes a 5 lug conversion kit, or just order a lightweight aftermarket kit. your 88 has the larger spindles, so either option is viable. you don't need a backseat. just carpet/finish the area. gears are totally dependent on the engines capability, tire size, and desired RPM's. As I know nothing about the capabilities of that engine, I couldn't even venture a guess on this topic. I don't have my 08 IHRA rule bok either, so I am not sure whether a turbo car can still run it SS. They did run SS/DX as you mentioned a couple years ago. If they do, the index is 9.35 for the quarter mile. It would take a very healthy 140 cu inch car to run that quick let alone run very far under the index. IMO, this is definately not a class to enter into the world of SS racing. |
Re: been told too many things bout this combo...
its either this, or run ss/gt with a 429 toploader combo. im just confused as why the 4 cyl is rated different than the v8. just because of the turbo?

Re: been told too many things bout this combo...
You can change the front clip, taillights and dash and run the car as an older coupe that is in the classification guides as a turbo 4. Go to NHRA online and brows through the guides and pick a year.
http://www.nhra.com/tech_specs/class...ion/index.html Mustang used the same body from 79 to 94 so changing years is easy, Then go to the engine specs to make sure you have the right part numbers. http://www.nhra.com/tech_specs/engine/index.html#ford GOOD LUCK |

He can run that engine in SS/DX. It says any engine. He will need a loaded Brinks Truck parked in the driveway to do it though.
