SRD 1973 Vega

It was suggested I move my thread. I bought this Vega looking for a light bracket car. When I got it home I could tell that it was not a backyard built car. After looking at as many pictures of Pro Stock cars I was convinced it was an SRD car. I got in touch with Pete Hutchinson of Malvern PA who worked at SRD. Pete agreed to look at pictures of the car. He asked for additional pictures and cinfirmed that he had built this car. I am trying to find out who the original owner was. It is a 73. Has a Body in white trim tag with a 73 date on it. It was updated to a 77. The front suspension was white. Any help is greatly appreciated
I am bad with pictures. Try this link to see pictures http://classracer.com/classforum/showthread.php?t=66543

We need some complete outside pictures of the car as it sits now. Maybe also a firewall picture that shows the three colors it used to be.

Re: SRD 1973 Vega

I talked to Dale, he was very nice. He had great pictures on his Facebook which lead me to believe that the car was a SRD. I also used a few pictures of Grumpys car. Grunps rear suspension, mainly wishbone, was identical to what I have. Both cars mid plate were also the same. My car was wrecked on the driver side. Frame was slightly buckled behind the front suspension. Looks like the driver quarter was replaced. The car had been updated with some square box and a few extra bars added. The three link was removed for a ladder bar and coil over shocks. There is still evidence of the early straight down wheelie bars on the rear cross member. The rear frame is a triang coming to a point in the back. The car was owned by a Rod Weideman in the northern mid west. Maybe Wisconsin. I have not been able to locate him.

So, do you think this was your car?

Re: SRD 1973 Vega

I do not think so. Dale said when he sold his car it went to Maryland, which means nothing, it still could have ended up in Wisconsin. I do not see a car in those colors having a white suspension and a red rear differential in it. Hi build pictures do not show a wishbone locator on the car. His car was a three link. he explained it to me. After seeing just enough of his car and just enough of Grunps car I know what the three link would look like. Part of it is still on the housing. And part as been cut off.

Blevins car was a white 73 SRD. The front suspension was white. Anyone have any pics of the Dana 60 in it?

And if you can find a copy of this issue, you just might find enough clues to see if it is the same car you have.

Just bought an issue off Ebay. His tach in the picture is similar to the holes in my dash. But a lot were done like that. I am waiting out this weekend for some information. If I do not get the info by Wednesday I have a few phone numbers to call. I am trying to be patient with an individual

I will have the car at the York Nostalgia show Saturday July the 8th. I have also found out the car was bought in the Chicago Illinois area in the early 80s. It was white and blue and called Dream Weaver.

Re: SRD 1973 Vega

I think it was. By then it was updated to a 77. It was bought by Jerry Gilbertson of Wisconsin. He is deceased. Then owned by Rod Weideman.

The car is in a tent inside of the track. My brother and I delivered it to the York show last evening. Already some really great cars there. Also met Wayne Jessel. Looks like it will be a good show

Re: SRD 1973 Vega

The key at this point is finding someone who remembers a car named Dream Weaver in Illinois in the late 70's, early 80s. I had a great time at the York show. I got a few names to check into, but not owners. I had two people tell me the car was not an SRD, which with out a doubt it is. I talked to Pete again on 7, 9, 17 and he has no problem with his verification of the car. It has had some changes and updates. It has had square steel added, the three link was changed to ladder bar and coil overs were added. But most of the original structure is still intact. Friday a big name racer told my dad the car was not a body in white. Then my dad showed him the trim tag that was put back on by SRD. I asked Pete why they put the tags back on. He said it made the cars classy in his words. They reinstalled the tags on there firewalls on the passenger side of the car. We are still trying to decode parts of the trim tag. It has CMR 114136 on it. Also there is not a build date on it. Pete is convinced it is an early built car by them. He also says they did not get many Body in white cars. The customer supplied the body. The search goes on

If you think the car is from the Midwest, you should try to contact someone that was a member of the UDRA Pro stock circuit from that era..May be they remember a car named the Dream Weaver.I have some Midwest Drag News magazines from back then.i will check them.

Re: SRD 1973 Vega

Maybe try to contact Bret Kepner. He is very knowledgeable on the UDRA and early Pro Stocks.

Re: SRD 1973 Vega

Got a completely solid lead today from a member. BIG thanks for the info. The car was owned by Gary Stewart. It was black and red. Then sold to Gary Drink, not sure on spelling. He then painted it blue and white and called it Dream Weaver. Supposed to have been sponsored by Chicago area Chevy dealers.

Besides Bret Kepner. There is a guy on the nostalgia pro stock group on Facebook named Ariel Cordero that knows just about everything from that era of P/S cars. Both are on Facebook. Bob Olson drove cars for Gary Steward for quite a while. Gary's a great guy. Bob worked at Motor Sport Research. Last I heard they were still in business doing roundy round stuff.
