69 Camaro B/S

I figure since we have 18hrs of driving left this would be a good time to start this thread........ I'll get back to the road trip but a little history on the car first.

I bought this car back in 97 and ran it on the street for a few years. Around 2000 I pulled the motor and planned my first engine build. Long story short life got in the way and the car sat.
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psckleryp8.jpg
Around 2009 I was able to regularly go racing with my old man and it wasn't long till we were talking about building it into a stocker. 2 things I was sure of....big block and stick!!!!

I spent the next 5 years collecting parts and slowly picking on the car until 2014 when I started racing super comp. Unfortunately progress came to a screeching hault until a months ago when a deal was made half way across the country.......

Big shout out to Tim Tosto and RCE on building 1 bad *** piece. I can only hope it runs half as good as it looks.

It's been a long journey but I'm almost at a point to start building the car.....

I was able to get the firewall sandblasted but spent the last month on my back hand scraping the underside. Should be ready for paint this week.

Overall the car is in decent shape for spending its life in New England. I will need to have a section of the drivers floor replaced due to a hack job from the past and the drivers side rocker developed some cancer from the years of sitting.

If all goes well I should have it rolling and heading to the chassis shop by the middle of February.

Had a couple productive days....

Got most of the bottom Finnished. 1 coat of POR and 2 coats of Satin black.
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psz71kmzu7.jpg
The Moser rear was the first thing I bought back in 09. Dragged it out of the corner and after a few hrs of cleaning laid some painted.
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0rbnj0vb.jpg
Also got the upper control arms together. Afco bushings, Global West cross shafts and Extended low friction ball joints.

Oh man, it's sooooooo nice to see progress....
After a month wait the Global West shackles came in. Driver side was a absolute nightmare buy passenger side went smooth
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...pstrjwujki.jpg

Everything is mocked up for now. One of the last things will be welding the Calvert perches, I'll safety wire the rotors and calipers then.

Back at it.... finished cleaning the fire wall and 1 coat of por down, waiting on the correct color for the door jams and upper cowl. I'll tone down the shine with a few coats of satin.
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4gkeghkg.jpg

We planned on notching the cross member for oil pan removal. I really like how Tim had his done for the 67 so I had my guy copy it with added Jack point and tow hook.Came out great!!!! Hope to have it mounted later this week.

Re: 69 Camaro B/S

Subframe installed with Speed Tech solid bushings.
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psxuibjeo2.jpg

Started getting the front suspension together..... Afco solid bushings top and bottom, Global West offset cross shafts and Afco low friction ball joints should keep the front loose. Santhuff shocks and landrum springs to handle the wheel stands.

Re: 69 Camaro B/S

It's been a long battle but the steering is finally coming together.

The first problem I had was with the tie rods.... I planned on using the Baer tracker kit but had a problem with the inner tie rods being to long. After a lot if back and forth I decided to build inners. I'm happy how they came out.
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...pshq0xdduy.jpg

I also ran into a issue with the column being compressed leaving a 1/2" gap between the rag joint and flange. We couldn't figure out why since there was no evidence of a front end collision. I think this happened from the body bushings being so bad.

I put a strap around the flange and tried to pull it out with no luck. I was able to slide the column down and everything fits great with no bind.

Gonna tackle the headliner this weekend then she's ready for the chassis shop.

I may be too late and I'm sure you know better than me, but do you want a headliner in the car while it's at the chassis shop?

Looking good, by the way.

Thanks!!!!!

Initial thinking was it would be easier to install without the cage. Since I'm doing it myself worse case it's $70 if it gets damaged....I really don't want to pull the rear glass and plan on running a 12 point so the extra bars will make the back tough. I'll cover it with cardboard and the guy doing the cage said he will use a welding blanket.

Did your POR on the firewall also or just the frame?

I thought about all of that, too. The one car I was involved with, my partner did the headliner after the roll bar. I have a car currently that I'd like to leave the headliner in for reasons you state. I'll be doing that rollbar, so I'll only have myself to blame if I burn it down!

The sub frame was sandblasted and sprayed with krylon semi gloss...... I happened to have 1/2 gallon of POR 15 lying around when I cleaned the firewall and underside so I gave that 2 coats then covered with the krylon. I want everything easy and cheap to touch up.

Awesome build! I would put a McLeod Softloc in it. People will say other clutches are faster, but the McLeod is very tunable and works great. I have a different combo, but we've run 9.65@135 with a McLeod 10" clutch.

Thanks!!
McLeod is the plan.

Hopefully heading to the chassis shop this weekend.

This October I will have owned the car for 20 years. Hopefully I can have it out for the Dutch

Re: 69 Camaro B/S

After a lot of curse words I was able to get the headliner installed. The front came out decent but the back, well I have some more tweaking to do. I ran out of time before my chassis guy picked it up.
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...pspmi3wrly.jpg

My original plan was to over cage the car a bit. Installed the inner fenders and radiator support so he could run the bars through the firewall.
First time it's seen the sun in 4/5 years.

And...... it's gone.

Hopefully in about a month I'll have good things to say about a new shop opening up in MA.

It was brought up we need to name the car.
My girl said since I've been spending so much time with it, Spending all my money on it and sneaking out at night to work on it....... it's now dubbed THE MISTRESS

Well...... it appears I have entered chassis shop prison. The floor and rocker have been done for a month now. Although I've received several promises a surprise visit yesterday and the cars not even in his shop yet. It's to bad the guy does good work and I think we've come up with a unique designed for the cage but if there's no progress next week I'm gonna have to pull it...

I've heard so many stories of chassis prison. I was lucky when I had Brink Racecraft work on mine. Was dropped off and I pick it up when they original said it would be done. Unfortunately, not all shops are that way. Hope you get it back soon. Can't wait to see it finished!

FINALLY... PROGRESS!!!

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psbifzdpzg.jpg

The shop doing the work specializes in X275 stuff. I wanted the car over caged a bit. I think he came up with a unique design and can't wait to get it back for the final push!!!
