Modified Eliminator Wars in the 70's
 

As many would agree ,the greatest eliminator killed off by the NHRA . No slush boxes here. No 5 speeds. Liberty 4 speed chrysler boxes were a way of life. Some of the most succesful drivers of the sport cut their teeth here.

There were quite a few 5 speeds from the mid 70s on.

I crewed on my friends F/G Corvette for a while and must have helped pull the trans a half a dozen times. It was a hemi 4 speed sitting on my chest. I believe this this was either 75 or 76. I know they updated the car after a flywheel explosion and crash and probably went to the 5 speed at that time.

Any pictures or stories of modified before they dumped it I believe in 1982. The protest must have been something to see.

I have been busy trying to get a race car ready but I did not know I had missed this post. Modified Production was the "Sportsman" type racing the spectators come to see. There was nothing like those high winding small blocks and the shifting of the old 4-speeds. Today we get all of the conversation about Stock/Superstock Combo racing and in those days the old Gas/Modified races drew lots of cars and tons of fans.

That would be Kay Voegelin holding the car in the burnout box and Norm Mayersohn driving. The car was owned by Rick Voegelin and was the 'original' car built for the then-new Super Mod class. Rick was the editor of Car Craft Magazine and Norm a staff writer. They were the main proponents for the Super Mod classes in Modified Eliminator and were responsible for NHRA accepting the premise and adding Super Mod as a class in Modified Eliminator. The build was done in 30 days and chronicled in Car Craft Magazine. The car ran hard, earning several NHRA Div 7 Modified Championships, a couple of runner-ups at national events and a gaggle of national records.
