Balancing slicks
 

I am looking for someone in central n.j. who can balance a set of 3056M/T with tubes on 15x8 Cragar SS wheels.They were bubble balanced before and it was a smooth ride. The only difference is I added the tubes so I can use the car again, and the 2 latest attempts could shake the car off the jack stands. Thankyou, John Kissel K242

John, I use the same tire 3056(ST) with tubes.
A (re)balance is essential.
I get a lot more life out of my tires including side wall life
with tubes; also, I lose very little, if any air!
I also screw the tires to the rims, witch I do before balancing(of course).

Before you rebalance , blow up the tires to about 30 psi , then let all the air back out , then blow them back up and balance them . Sometimes the tubes fold up on themselves when they get aired up and then they will be heavy in that area . By letting the air back out , hopefully they will even out the folds , and that will help the balance .

I've had the tube "bunch up" and cause ugly vibration. I had to break the bead to redistribute the tube.

What they said about the tube twisted or bunching. I would break them down. I baby powder the tubes to make them slippery so the spread out good. I inflate the tube a little with 1 bead off then deflate and put that bead on the wheel. This is how we did bicycle tubes so you could be sure they were straight. I've seen then was so bad they tore the valve stem off of the tube doing a burnout on a big slick.

Thanks all, I did all of the above including leting the tubes relax for a couple of days after i took them out of the box, then a couple of days with a little air in them.to get their natural shape.I have done this before, I just need someone with a bubble balancer who knows what they are doing, like "The Bud Man", he did a perfect job, just can't find him. I have learned in the last 15yrs.of living here, I ain't in Florida anymore, and there are lots of experts around here, and not many who know what they are doing.This goes for electricans to doctors. We done them on my Brothers Super Stock cars since the early 80's with an old school bubble balancer using duct tape to keep the stick on weights in place. Never an issue.

Well, I found a shop that was recomended by someone who races a car similar to mine. I went there, they had to move 1 slick 3 times, and the other 1 once..They did a perfect job with their spin balancer machine. I guess it all depends on finding people who know how to do things the right way and want to do the job properly. John Kissel K242

the problem with balancing Cragar S/S rims, is that the hole [where the cap bolts on] is not a true center. when using a spin balancer, the cone seats inside that hole and the whole deal is "out of round' thus throwing the balance out of wack. bubble balancing S/S rims is the only way.
