Battery powered air compressor
 

Noticed in a picture in the Dragster, Ralph Porpora was using what looked to be a small battery powered air compressor. Something handy to make a last minute change in tire pressure while in the staging lanes.
Anyone know where to find one of those?

I don't know what he had, but I've used such compressors from Home Depot and Walmart. I remember them being around $40. But you have the issue of securing it in the car while racing. That's why I use a small bicycle foot pump I keep in the car for in the lanes, which can also be locked in a rather small metal tool box bolted behing my seat. The compressor I use after each race to make sure the tires have enough air the next day after overnight cooling. Then I recharge at the motel.

I bought mine at Sears it is part of their 19.2 volt line of tools. I love it it even has a built in pressure gauge.

Appreciate the info. Stick cars tend to beat up bias tires in a short period of time. On a cool night, you have to be careful not to let too much air out before you run. If the race is stopped for 10-15 minutes, you are in trouble. I have found the air leaks out of the tire screws much faster than than the sidewalls. Still not brave enough to run without screws.

If I go with the battery powered compressor, I most likely forget to charge the battery. If I go with the bicycle pump, I have arms like Hulk Hogan.

Not to worry, the battery lasts quite a while and will fill several tires per charge, then you plug it in to a 110 for a while and away you go again. I bought several and got them at WalMart ($ 35-40). Every racer should have one or two! Jim

A bracket racing buddy of mine uses this pump. It is slick to have with you in the lanes, and the battery lasts pretty well. He says with a second battery this thing would be priceless.

I want one for christmas.

one of my bracket buddies uses a similar pump but it works off of the cigarette lighter. he wired one of those into his super gas vette and it works great. got the pump at kragens i think.

I have a buddy that sent me an e-mail about the battery powered air compressor. Here is most of his e-mail, for your reading pleasure.

Did you see the post on the battery powered air compressor? Since I
don't post......thought maybe you'd want to fill them in. I found
absolutely the nuts when it comes to these. Sears has a new part number
for a 19.2V battery powered air compressor that looks like a hand drill
with a hose hanging out of the snout instead of a drill chuck. Has 200
PSI capability and is only $39.99. Then you have to get battery and
charger....but some of the chargers are universal and will do various
volt rated batteries. It says that the compressor....less
battery...weighs less than 2.9 pounds!!! It's a catalog only item. I
have one on order as we speak and is supposed to ship by 7/27. Went and
picked up the battery last night. This thing could be behind the seat
in a little bag and not have to worry about air tank in the lanes for
those occasions when sun going down and heated....sit on the
asphalt....thin air pressure in tires starts plummeting like a rock off
a cliff. At 19.2V, it has some grunt to spin for sure and comes with a
snap-on type chuck and mini accessories.
