Super Gas MPH
I am looking for a little guidance on understanding Super Gas MPH. I'm not new to bracket racing, just new to .90 racing. I am trying to select the right engine combination for my 1938 Chevy roadster.
I am leaning toward a 582 Chevy that would make 1,000-1,050hp. If that engine ran all out at say 7.90 at 167mph, how many mph would be lost due to the throttle stop when it's running 9.90? (ie would it run 9.90 at 164?) I'd like to have around 165mph if it's reasonable to do. Thanks for any help. Nick |
Re: Super Gas MPH
Well It may be a little different with a full bodied car and of course it will also vary with were you use the throttle stop but as a point of comparison my 540/900 hp S/C dragster ran 7.70@170 off the stop and 8.90@166 on the stop so I lose about 4 mph (stop on at .5 off at 1.8-2.0 sec.)
Since your car is more powerful but heavier I don't know if my experience is a reliable indicator of what to expect. p.s. If I could afford one I would have a 632 with big chief heads and run 8.90's in the low 180's There are a couple of advantages in doing so. First you keep you opponent in sight which makes it easier to gauge the closing rate and stripe. Second since they run harder in the last half they run much softer and more consistent in the first half. |
Re: Super Gas MPH
Novanicks,
Too run the big mph in S/G you'll need a couple of things: 1). Plenty of Horsepower 2). Fairly light car (under 2500lb's) 3). Go on the stop very early and still be able to get the tree |
Re: Super Gas MPH
Thank you guys. Very helpful.
Shake and Bake - to run 180mph at 9.90 how much HP does that take? Are there any other tricks to running big MPH other than HP? For example, I've heard timing retard on the big end can help, but I don't if that's say 0.5 mph or 2.5 mph. |
Re: Super Gas MPH
Not sure I've seen a 180mph SG car yet but I'd imagine your talking 1300+hp
You can squeeze a little extra MPH by going on the stop sooner. In SC our first timer is set at .000. Sooner you can get off the stop sets you up with more track to pull. |
Re: Super Gas MPH
J & S Racing,
Were you at the Summit Nationals in Norwalk ,Ohio last year or at the April Indy points Race this year? If you were you would have seen a 180mph+ S/G car. Just for the record.... |

Re: Super Gas MPH
Have to agree it depends on the set and the car. FWIW my S/St car went a best of 161.2 in S/St. All out its best mph was 170.7

Re: Super Gas MPH
