The Complete Book of Stock-Bodied Drag Racing cir. 1968

Has anyone ever seen this before? I picked it up today at our local library's annual book store. 160 pages and better than typical magazine writer quality. Chapters on "The Stockers", "The Super Stocks", "Factory Experimentals", "Modified Production", "Gas Coupes", "Street Roadsters", "Car Clubs and Fun". Lots of references to old time drag racers and the cars.

I had a copy of that book when I was in grade 3. I was 8 years old and got it from the Scholastic book club. I'm pretty sure I read it so much it fell apart- remember it well.

I still have my copy. I wondered if the "Mullinax Brothers" were the same family that owned the Ford dealership in Margate, Florida.

I read through the Stock and Super Stock sections last night and was surprised about how much history was there. I'm "kind of" an old guy and was immersed in full-bodied drag cars since I was about 14, but I had never heard or read much about the start of Stock-Super Stock racing in the 50s. The book records that Arnie Beswick, Tim Woods of Stone-Woods-Cook fame, and A.J. Fojt were big winners driving Oldsmobiles in the mid-50s. There is also a good history of the development of the Stock classes from a perspective of over 40 years ago. It's easier to do that when the history is just over your shoulder and all those people are still active rather than having to uncover ancient paths. This book is a treasured find. Maybe this could be a seed for a comprehensive history of the full-bodied area of the sport?

How many remember Atlas Bucron tires? For Stockers around here in '59/'60 it was those or re-capped slicks. There was a used tire store here that sold them for $15.00 each. Had been been marked "Adj" with what looked like a branding iron, on the whitwall. We just turned the black side out anyway.
