Tow vehicle

Good afternoon. looking for opinions/input on the 3500 series gas engine trucks. looking in the 2012-2015 year range. Towing a 24' enclosed with 3400# car and other goodies. Had been shopping for diesel, but the gas trucks are about 4-6000 less around here. Also curious about going with single rear wheel. I know the dually is more stable, just curious how much of a difference it makes going to single rear. Currently running a 98 Chevy 3500 dually, but it's getting a bit worn out as my daily driver work truck. Thanks in advance.

Go with a 2001-2007, 8.1 GM there hard to find but very durable. There's no other gas engine that can compare

William,

I tow a 24 foot enclosed trailer hauling a 3,000 pound car with all the usual stuff inside. I tow with a Chev 2500 HD with a single rear wheels and it tows like a dream. We have also towed the trailer with my sons Chev 3500 with dual rear wheels. Can't really tell any difference. He bought the dually because he plans to put a camper on the truck and wanted the extra load capacity. Both our trucks are crew cabs with the Duramax / Allison drive train. The dual wheel will certainly be more stable, so buy that if you have any doubts. For me, the single rear wheel setup works fine.

Thanks for the input guys. Sounds like the 2500 series could be in play as well now. Hadn't totally discounted it, but knowing how much my 1500 struggles with the enclosed empty, I hadn't really considered it much either.

FYI that they are coming out with larger gas motors in the 2020 models. The 6.4 Hemi is a pretty good motor and you can find them a bit cheaper than the competitors.

Ran across a 2016 Ram 2500, 4 door cab with the 6.4 hemi & automatic trans today. 84,000 miles and looks to be in good shape. Was a coorporate owned truck. Going to see what I can find about tow ratings and such. Any suggestions of what I may want to look out for on it?

I'd call Jeff Teuton...know he's recommended the 6.4 and probably has a wealth of info.
